I left after the 1st set against UNI. Some general observations...sitting next to some Hawkeye parents & they were discussing Urquhart's injury, seems to be a foot from what was being said. Cole struggled a bit against Omaha in serve receive. None of the L/DS stood out. I've been a critic of Ortega but she was fairly solid setting. Both Omaha and UNI took advantage of her when blocking. You can see the potential with Mateo - she just needs reps & experience at the D1 level so coming in at semester was probably a good move. Bailey seemed to be clearly the leader. Buettner struggled passing early against Omaha but will be a positive addition. Nia has to drive a coach crazy. She'll make an amazing play then 3 that make you scratch your head. Middles were solid but not spectacular - result of the passing I mentioned earlier. With Urquhart not hitting, it's hard to judge how they'd look at full strength. Nice to see some volleyball again and I'll probably go next weekend as well. Did they run a 5-1? I’ve heard Ortega has been setting at a very high level. I heard McSweeney was unstoppable in the middle. Would be great to see her blow up. Also was told the team dynamics and energy was very impressive. I plan to be at the final tournament as well and look forward to seeing how they match up vs Iowa State and the other in state teams.

When they nailed the pass Delaney was hitting at a high level. Passing was off to start however. Omaha had an outside I need to give props to. They just had t-shirts on with no number so I'm not sure who it was...Shayla McCormick possibly? Nice player. Many of us have mentioned blocking as a concern & it still should be but blocking won the 1st set against UNI. Nia had 2 on slides & Toy had 2 as well on middle attacks. Team certainly seemed together. When the 2nd unit was playing, everyone was engaged in what was happening.

They just had t-shirts on with no number so I'm not sure who it was... That seems to be the norm (at least for the spring scrimmages/exhibitions at UNI; never been to any other schools for it). In fact, Iowa today was the first team that I can recall ever actually wearing numbers in the various spring volleyball days that I've attended at UNI. I do wish uniforms/numbers were more common for that, because I'm terrible at recognizing players without them, but I can understand why most teams don't do it

Thanks for the further information. Curious if Darling played? Darling played with the 2nd group in set 2 against Omaha & that was it for the matches I saw.

They switched the 1st and 2nd lineup ever set. Darling played every set with the 2nd team. Defends well. Great energy player, Serve receive needs work. Washington look like she hit negative the 1st 2 matches than went off the 3rd match hitting every kill. Overall I’m hearing some nice improvements by the Hawks.

Overall this spring, who did Iowa beat, split, and lose to?

The Hawks are looking much improved since even the first weekend. Coach Barnes and his staff have a lot of work to do but I am encouraged by what I'm seeing/hearing. There is passion but control in how they are playing. Solidifying a good and deep 2025 class is the only way to continue the growth. Speaking of 2025's...thought I'd make a list by position of who the staff seems to be looking at. Whether there's mutual interest, I have no idea and many will have their pick of schools so take this for what it's worth. In no particular order with club team listed. Middles Natalie Wardlow - Nebraska One Georgia Watson - Mission Mackenzie Collins - Houston Juniors Journey Peppers - 501 Volley Olivia Grenadier - Legacy Reese Dunkle - Circle City Ashby Zubchevich - City Layla Collins - Sports Performance Sidney Hamaker - Sports Performance Leni Stanton Parker - Metro Lauren Weise - Sudden Impact Manaia Ogbechie - Oaks Kalyssa Blackshear - Surfside Kaylee Arreola - Duke City Reagan McGivern - Mavs Zoe Gillen Malveaux - Drive Nation Mia Clyburn - Carolina Juniors Kenna Cogill - Az Storm Taylor Harvey - Club V Erica Sayers - Colorado Juniors Hazel Alevok - Wildfire Gabbi Pitcel - Milwaukee Sting Jordan Taylor - Houston Juniors Abbey Emch - Infinity

Schedule for Saturday. Buettner is going to be spent by the time they play Iowa State if Urquhart doesn't hit & Washington subs for her again like this past weekend.

Schedule for Saturday. Buettner is going to be spent by the time they play Iowa State if Urquhart doesn't hit & Washington subs for her again like this past weekend. 4 matches for each team. Wonder how many games will be in that. Good way to go out with a bang of info. Teams won’t officially get back to full time practices until around August 10th. Over 3 months. It’s a shame your coaches don’t get to coach them at all over that time! I thought they were suppose to like basketball does in the summer. What happened to that?

Hopefully they sweep Western & Drake. They play at 10, 11, & 12 to start. If Buettner has to play 6 sets with no break before Iowa State...she'll be gassed. I'm not sure what happened with that NCAA proposal about summer workouts??

With just an hour between matches I bet they don’t play 3 sets.

In the story on Iowa State's athletic site about this weekend's tourney: "Matches will be played in two sets to 25 points."

With the four matches, Iowa State will defintly be the biggest and most important for the Hawks.I wonder if Coach has thought about putting a middle on the outside for a match or putting Black on the outside and having a middle play rightside to give Buettner a break. I heard Onabanjo played a rotation or two on the outside in Omaha so I wonder if that is something he is thinking about doing. They have a perfect amount of middle. i think it would be benificial to utilize them.

In the story on Iowa State's athletic site about this weekend's tourney: "Matches will be played in two sets to 25 points." That makes sense. Keeps it going with 1 hour matches. 8 sets total. 2 pretty easy sets vs Western.
