OK, interesting to see the teams Steino put together vs. the LMU match currently in progress:
#1: Van Winkle / Simo #2: Justine / Monkhouse #3: Newberry / Muret #4: Quade / Sparks #5: Yeomans / Powers #6: May / Whitmarsh
Looks like a lot of experimenting going on. Pairs 2 and 4 look vulnerable in theory... let's see how they do. I'm thinking Sparks was given to Quade to see how she does with a UCLA benchmark little.
The two players I am not seeing that I expected to be top 5 are
Monk-Heidrich, and Denaburg.
Also don't see Walters whom Steino had good things to say about in his comments a couple of weeks ago.
For anyone who is there... is Monkhouse split blocking with Justine? I could see Team MonkH (House and Heidrich) in the #4 spot split blocking.

My guess is that Stein will rotate a few players in at least at the lower flights for the UH Tournament.

Well, teams 2, 3, and 4 were taken to the tiebreak set.
Sparks doesn't lose more than a handful of sets all year at the 4 spot with a quality Big, so that Benchmarking was useful. I was actually wondering whether Simo or Sparks would play the #1 Little, and it looks like Simo got that, at least for today.

Is Quade actually ahead of May?

Is Quade actually ahead of May? I think when you pair her with Sparks, that is a legit 4 team. Pair Sparks with anybody else with actual Beach experience and its a 1 or 2 team. So, no. It was a gift to Quade to pair her with Sparks, IMO just to give Quade an idea of how it is supposed to be done. A controlled learning environment for Quade.

Justine blocked full-time and Monkhouse played defense (and was served a majority of the time).

Looks like UCLA is underway in Hawaii:
This match's pairings in comparison to the LMU pairings:
#1 Savvy Simo Abby Van Winkle (same) #2 Lily Justine Lea Monkhouse (same) #3 Lexi Denaburg Lindsey Sparks (changed) #4 Devon Newberry Megan Muret (same) #5 Jacqueline Quade Rileigh Powers (changed)
Sparks picks up Denaburg as her big for this one, and Quade picks up Powers.
Looks like Pairs 1, 3, won their first sets, and Pairs 2,4,5 dropped their first sets.
**edit** Match is over. UCLA wins 3-2. Pairs 1, 3, and 5 win, Pair 2 loses in straight sets, Pair 4 loses in three sets.
. Pair 1 is undefeated. Pairs 2, 4 are 1-1. Pairs 3 and 5 are new, but component parts Sparks and Quade are 2-0.
No team retains a perfect set record.

The LSU match is set, should be starting now. This match should be a tossup.
Slight change in the pairs for this one:
#1 Savvy Simo Abby Van Winkle #2 Lindsey Sparks Lexi Denaburg (move up from #3 ato #2) #3 Lily Justine Lea Monkhouse (team drops from #2 to #3) #4 Devon Newberry Megan Muret #5 Rileigh Powers Madi Yeomans (Yeomans replaces Quade)
Still haven't seen Whitmarsh or May today, and haven't seen Monk-Heidrich this season so far.
**edit**
After one set, UCLA wins at Teams 1,2,3,5, and drops Team 4 for a 4-1 first set.

On to the Stanford Match. This one gives Steino an opportunity to try out some players who haven't played yet this year.
Match #1 Savvy Simo Abby Van Winkle (same) Match #2 Mac May Lindsey Sparks (Denaburg out for May) Match #3 Lily Justine Lea Monkhouse (same) Match #4 Hannah Phair Jaden Whitmarsh (Phair's first appearance this year), Newberry and Muret sit this one out Match #5 Cami Sanchez Jacqueline Quade (Sanchez' first appearance this year) Yeomans and Powers sit this one out.
So, we still haven't seen Monk-Heidrich, Walters or Harrer.

OK, semifinal vs. Stanford underway.
Pairs for this one are the same as the penultimate match vs. LSU yesterday, except 4 and 5 switch:
#1 Savvy Simo Abby Van Winkle (same) #2 Lindsey Sparks Lexi Denaburg (same) #3 Lily Justine Lea Monkhouse (same) #4 Rileigh Powers Madi Yeomans (also played vs. LMU at 5s and LSU at 5s) #5 Megan Muret Devon Newberry (dropped down from #4 in the LSU match)
Still no sign of Monk-Heidrich, Walters, or Harrer. So, thus far, this is a 15 participant team.
Stanford with an opportunity in the 3rd set at 1s to pick up their first Pairing victory of the season.

Let’s see if Newberry-Muret get a third chance in the finals (I don’t count Stanford as a real test). Maybe they just had a horrible day yesterday...
Also, not really looking like Sanchez or Phair are getting much of a chance this weekend.
