That was an enjoyable interview. Thank you for that. What a positive role model he is, as well as an expert of the game. Best beach coach in the game IMO. I agree it has served him well that he's gone after these mid-sized, high volleyball IQ, accomplished ballers rather than opt for more athletic, less experienced, attackers. Jessica Smith for instance is right in line with this. She's going to do big things. Only issue I see is that out of all the top level programs, UCLA is the most Southern California centric recruiter. That was OK five years ago, when California dominated the national junior tournaments, but it's changing fast. I'd like to see him go after his type of player, but just expand his recruiting to the players in other States more so. I read in another interview he was quoted as saying he wanted players that just knew UCLA the only choice for them. I'm not sure that's really fair to 16yr old girls from out of State who would rightly be thrilled and honored to be playing for USC, Berkley, or Pepperdine. They just aren't nuanced enough in the difference between the schools/programs to form an opinion on that. Very well stated above! Agree too on the point that beach is taking over the country and many other states have excellent players and many of the So Cal just get more attention. Stein has made some great selections!

What is the UCLA lineup going to look like? The Van Winkles will kill it. Probably Abby and Simo at 1, Denaburg and Sparks or Powers at 2, Tessa and Sparks or Powers at 3, Monkhouse and Whitmarsh at 4 and Quade and Brennan at 5. Brennan is about 5'6 but very strong and she can win.

2021 roster posted. No May and Monk-Heidrich. how come they aren't on there? For May, it’s hard to play both indoor and beach at the same time.

Wow by bad I wasn't thinking But where is Piper. This is surprising. Why would it be surprising? She spent two years on the team and never played in a match. Considering those circumstances, I find it very unsurprising that she would either transfer to another program, or just not play the sport and be a "regular" student.

Agree, somewhat surprising seeing she qualified MD of MBO last year and never saw court. Tough lineup to crack.

how come they aren't on there? For May, it’s hard to play both indoor and beach at the same time. Really points out that there’s only a lone senior who was playing both indoor and beach. Soon will be gone the last vestiges of when half the UCLA Beach starters were playing indoor as well.

Simo was on indoor scholarship last year.

2021 roster posted. No May and Monk-Heidrich. So strange that May is not on there. Monk-Heidrich is such a hard worker and didn't get much of a chance, but the recruiter person said her scholarship was performance based which seems strange. Wish she was still on the team, she is a fighter.
