The path of a lower-end program building towards the upper echelon of the Big 10 Conference is unlikely to be a linear one, especially during a pandemic. With that being said, OSU and their new staff had a much longer than normal preseason to get ready for arguably the worst team in the conference (a team they swept last year 3-0 and 3-1 with a much younger team) committed 67 hitting errors, and from my perspective did not show any notable areas of improvement from last season. I understand it’s only the first two matches, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have expected to see some improvement especially after adding one of the top recruits in the country. I am not suggesting Carlston was a better coach, not in the least. I believe Geoff and his staff spent the better part of this time at Ohio State over their skis. But after these two matches, I see many more similarities between the end of 2019 season and the beginning of 2021 than I see differences. The numbers certainly suggest this. There is a serious fallacy here... and that is that that preseason doesn't mean crap if you can't 1) Hold practices because everything keeps getting shut down over and over. 2) Scrimmage ANYONE. Out of the very few players who saw minutes last weekend, how many of them have taken meaningful swings in the college game? The BIGGEST issue was passing, and that's all chemistry. The Nuts just don't have it yet. They significantly outplayed the Turtles for most of the weekend, just made stupid mistakes and got careless with the ball enough times to make the matches go 5. I think making ANY sweeping statements about a coaching staff or team after literally 2 matches that are being played over a year after the last match is a fool's errand.

Maryland isn’t the worst team in the conference. They are significantly better than Rutgers and most teams not in a P5 their record just sucks every year because they have to play the big 4 constantly.

Based on the photo included in this tweet from Friday's win a few updates on who looked available this weekend.
Numbers on the roster not dressed in the photo: #2 Camryn Moeller (I think she is second from the left) #3 Mia Grunze (Almost certain she is next to Rylee Rader (#20) wearing a walking boot on her left foot) #7 Hannah Gruensfelder (I don't see her in this picture, unless I am confusing her and Camryn)

Soooooo Maryland is looking good so far against Nebraska on the road, not saying they’re great but you claiming that they’re the worst team in the conference was a huge reach and those two wins the Buckeyes fought out against them weren’t as bad as you made them out to be

The Illinois series this upcoming weekend is crucial if they want to give themselves a legit shot to make the 48 team tournament as an at-large this year.
Illinois, Michigan, and Purdue are the 3 series it feels they must make some headway in and win some matches. Obviously they need to hold serve against Rutgers and Indiana as well. No expectations for any wins against PSU/MN/Neb imo.

I think realistically they need to win at least 1 of the 3 matches this week for a chance at the tournament, because from what I think Illinois is a better matchup for OSU than Purdue or Michigan. The Penn State match on Wednesday is probably the best chance to beat one of the top tier teams since they just went 5 @ Minnesota and have to travel and play twice in a short time.
