Yeah, because our "normal" did such a fantastic job in preventing the spread of disease. Maybe we could learn a little something from this.
"The flu season generally peaks between December and February each year, bringing up to 45 million illnesses, 810,000 hospitalizations and 61,000 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This year, however, as of Feb. 5, there have been only 1,455 cases in the U.S."
How much do you suppose 45 million cases of flu a year, 810K hospitalizations and 61,000 deaths cost the economy per year? What did COVID cost us? There is now a blueprint for taking out the US if a country actually does want to do this intentionally. Maybe we should incorporate some protections to keep the spread from being so broad and so deep the next time this happens?

I never took the flu shot before. Never had flu symptoms either, knock on wood. Got my first one ever this past year, because experts were worried about the potential for flu and covid to combine. Made sense, got the shot.
Nothing wrong with the argument ... but the fact of the matter is that masks suck and distancing with some arbitrary length is silly. You can wear one if it pleases you and stand back from every group of people talking/sitting at a normal distance, but I as sure hell won't, unless we're in special pandemic times where there are laws/mandates requiring it. Then sure. But normally, hell no.

Just remember 3,000 lives on 9/11 was enough to justify 500K+ deaths in Afghanistan and upwards of a million in Iraq. But apparently 600K lives isn't enough to justify closing restaurants for a couple of months. Those 600k were mostly just really old people that were going to die within <12mo of their death date, or fat/diabetic people who made poor life decisions to get into that condition, anyway. Personal responsibility. bad people, bad values.

From another thread on what we learned during the pandemic: The flu can have minimal effect, if we take proper precautions. learning which people I really want to avoid (the anti-masker/anti-vaxxer types) Many people are selfish AF. I learned that there are a lot of really stupid people posting on this board. No, wait...I knew that before the pandemic. Sums up how I feel about you far better than if I just said it.

I most definitely won't be reducing my enjoyment of life, to reduce the risk of spreading the seasonal flu. No one did before March 2019, and very few will be doing it going forward. Would be silly to change.
I'll say that as many times as you like. To your face, if you want, but I won't be wearing a mask when I do it.

My buddy loved Stephen Colbert’s old show. I explained it was a carefully crafted mock of Bill O’Reilly. You guys freaking out reminded me of my buddy. Cheers It really is so kind that you continue to explain those things us common folks just don't understand. We so appreciate your help. (this is where the eff you emoji goes.) Hey did I catch you in a “mood”? I’m not sure what you thought I was explaining to you. I shared an anecdote from my past that this incident reminded me of. Not sure why you’re ticked at me. It’s not my fault that I understand sarcasm.

I think the exception to this is if somebody has flu-like symptoms, many fewer people will try to ‘suck it up’ and go to work, school, etc. And bosses will be appreciative of that.

As was always the case before, if you're sick then go/stay home. That's always been the common saying. Agree that some people try to work through it.
Totally fine if someone chooses to wear a mask, distance, etc. if they think they're coming down with something.
I think it was clear, but I was talking about just normal people wearing masks all the time outside of their homes. Hell no. That takes away the enjoyment of being social. Show your face.

There is a story floating around here on Weibo. Says a Shanghai "大妈" (elderly woman, to put it kindly) refused to wear a face mask when boarding a bus, subway, or whatever that required you to wear a face mask. She kept refusing to wear the face mask and after a while she started claiming she is an American, she refuses to wear a face mask. This last part, I don't know if its true but I hope it is: After confirming the 大妈 does in fact hold an American citizenship, her Chinese citizenship was cancelled because China does not recognize dual citizenship, and all her retirement benefit has been cancelled as well since she is no longer a Chinese citizen. It was also reported that she was sent back to the US, and can not enter China for the next 5 years. General consensus here is she deserved what she got, putting herself above everyone else by not doing a simple thing like wearing a facemask in public transport. And before any anti-maskers says its her right, no...wearing face masks in public transportation, hospitals, gov't buildings, its the law. Only negative part of it all is that it put local Americans under a negative spotlight.

Apparently it happened in Beijing and was a Shanghai 大妈 who claimed she is an Amaerican...but she wasn't. Funny story, nonetheless. Should know better than listen to stories told by strangers while waiting for my tires to be fixed.
