Cal Poly will have 10 hitters on the roster and UC SB will have 14 next year. Is that a high number or normal? High in both regards, but both have their reasons. Both Poly and UCSB are trying to replace the loss of multiple starting pins. Poly have the best player in the conference in Dvoracek but no proven commodity at OH to help her, Jamie Stivers - 276 swings, hit .178 in 2019 - is the most experienced pin on the roster after Maia. They also lost about 900 balls in serve receive with L Dickson and OHs McRoskey and Jackson graduating. So they are bringing in lots of OH in the hope that they can find some offense (that ideally can also pass) but the issue is compounded because Dvoracek (so far in her career) hasn't passed, so if they continue to hide her in SR, they'll probably need either DS King or the Fr Strah to take a significant number of balls in SR. UCSB is even more complicated because they not only lost two 6 RO OHs (they were expecting this) but also lost their starting Libero and one of their starting Setters... As I mentioned in my initial write up, that means they are losing all of their passers; they really only used 3, from this season (a total of 1750 balls). So they are bringing in a class full of hitters (which we'll call the 'Who Wants To Be Lindsay Ruddins Class?') but now suddenly need to find 3 new passers too. One, I suspect, will be Sr Kobie Jimenez, who played DS as a Fr in 2017 next to star L Emi Petrachi but in 2018 got beaten out for the job by Fr Fleck, and barely played. Then in 2019, she lost the competition for the Libero jersey and again, barely played. So she'll be getting her first meaningful playing time in 2 years... And right now, that's their best option I can see... Offensively, they have Froley at OPPO but she can't play backrow. Farmer will move from OPP to OH this year, I expect, but given that she didn't pass at all as a Fr (and only hit .167 on the season, spending most of the year as third choice OPP) they'll need to make sure they don't overload her. And, assuming they stick with a 6-2 (they have no setter coming in but their 'other' setter from this year is only 5'7), they'll still need to find one new setter (none in the incoming class), two more hitters and a DS (who will either be a true FR or a player that hasn't played at all at UCSB). In short, they are in a tough situation. Coach Lantagne Welch likes to have a big roster, but she's clearly managed her scholarships badly and now has major holes at S and L, to go along with the challenge of replacing the best hitter in program history.

UCSB has a lot going on behind the scenes that will not help them what so ever What is happening behind the schemes that is impacting the program? I think these comments are based on the very high turnover rate in the program (they lost 4 sophomores this off-season - 3 to retirement and 1 to transfer) and suggestions that the coaching staff hasn't fostered a good atmosphere in the gym. Either way, it's disappointing not only for the Gauchos but also for the Big West that really needs strong teams to offset the initial addition of Bakersfield and UC San Diego this year.

Gold star - thank you. If you feel like writing the season recap or the 2020 outlook, and DMing it to me, I'd welcome it. If not, I'll put something together but I only saw them in person 4 times this year.

In short UCI was wiped out by a perfect storm of sorts. 1. After making back to back NIVC appearances UCI had a tough non-conference schedule set up. 2. UCI was decimated by injures again. 3. With 3 teams advancing to the 2nd round the conference was as good as it's been in the last dozen years. Those 3 factors combined with UCI's lack of experience (UCI graduated 4 1st Team players in DeSales, Kekauoha, Akpakpa and Koumelis the year before plus had a freshman setting last year) made for a last place finish. The healthiest UCI was all last season was for one match when they upset Hawaii. That was the team UCI fans were hoping for. But after leaving Hawaii the team was snake bit by more injuries and hit rock bottom.

Updated to include recaps and previews for the Rainbow Wahine, the Mustangs, the Gauchos, the Aggies and Beach. CSUN, Fullerton, Riverside & Irvine to go. I'll also add San Diego State's roster.
If anyone can contribute incoming freshman I may have missed, feel free (especially if you're a SDSU or CSUB fans... I know you're out there)!

Nice team write ups and very informative. Thanks for doings this bwf2.
As a LBSU fan I am really looking forward to next season. The program has a good base and this season’s recruiting class has talent that should plug in some holes and be available for some time. IMO Tuaniga is the talented missing piece that should elevate the teams productivity on the offensive end. Of course this also hinges on the development of the back-row players but I think there is enough there including the incoming freshman libero.
I think you were a little hard on Harward as she brought a lot more to the team and program than the quoted numbers indicate.
I think Hawaii is going to be impacted to a greater extent than most fans believe with the departure of their two quality setters. Beside their skill level they had the intangibles that carried and motivated their team. I would not be surprised if Cal Poly puts it together next season and wins the conference.

It was a nice diversion to dig a bit more into the prospects for 2020. Like you, I'm optimistic for Beach next year. Not only Tuaniga but Jaylen Jordan is a baller. I've watched her play for years and she should be exactly what they need in an OH2; especially since neither Williams or Martinez can pass. Regarding Harward, I get I'm in the minority but she's just not as good as people think she is. She was the 5th best passer on her team this year (all 4 DSes passed better) and her defense was squarely average in the BWC. I guess by "a lot more to the team" you mean leadership? That's part of the improvement I'm hoping to see next year. And I'm not placing that all on Harward. But her leadership really didn't show up on what was a schizophrenic team this year. If I were a Beach fan I really wouldn't be too worried about the Libero position. Hawaii definitely loses leadership with the graduation of Iosia but in BvS, Rasmussen and Skylar Williams they still have plenty of experience. A lot rests on Lang but if she's as good as we're hoping they'll be very strong. Especially if they get the younger Akana. I really can't emphasize how much Rasmussen changes that offense. She's the best blocking outside in the BW by light-years. CP are very dependant on Dvoracek. That's always a dangerous spot to be in. They also lost one of the best Liberos in the conference in Dickson. Assuming everyone stays healthy, I think Beach will be closer to CP than CP are to Hawaii.

I have not personally see Jaylen Jordan play in matches but have seen her in a camp. She is very athletic and quick and appeared to have a nice all around game.
My concern is that LBSU’s better pin hitters are undersized and having a mix of Williams, Martinez, Chavira and Jordan getting most of the minutes up front leads one to believe that the better equipped teams can really exploit their size advantage. And with no starting middles returning it would not shock me if the coaching staff tries to convert an outside with a little size to middle and the prime candidate would be Kennedy who closed the season as a starter on the left. I just do not see Canez having any impact as a starting middle.
I know LBSU needs to find a six rotation outside and if Jordan is that player then one of the better lefts on the team, Martinez, will not get the minutes her offensive production indicates she should get.

Davis and Beach will be like their chances of getting top 3 I think. UCSB might be lucky to get fifth.
