No way Riley Wagoner gets Player of the Year. On paper, it will be Cal Poly’s year to win. These are the players to watch for Big West POY: Dvoracek-Cal Poly Hellvig-Hawaii Rasmussen-Hawaii (if back to true form) White-UC Davis Froley-UCSB Rasmussen > Dvoracek Jolie had seen limited conference play but she had better all around numbers during preseason. Maia was outstanding in conference but she has never played against Jolie. If Jolie is healthy, we sill see how Maia hits around her and vice versa. Jolie has more finesse and knows when to tip, roll, or swing. Passing: Jolie > Maia Blocking: Jolie > Maia Jolie will have a better supporting cast next season. I just hope she remains healthy all season. Plus I’m a homer. Appreciate your disclaimer,...I'm a homer. So am I,...it's hard not to be waiting for the season to start. CAL POLY will be better in 2020 than they were in 2019!!! CAL POLY v. UHawaii will split their two matches,...like they did in 2019. BWC Champs will be decided how the two favorites vie against the other eight(?) schools. Maia Dvoracek's selection to the U.S> Women's Collegiate National Team is huge for this young lady. Only player selected in the Big West Conf.

The best thing for Poly would be for a pin hitter to emerge that can take some pressure off of Dvoracek. Last season they didn't really have that. If they can find a Robin to her Batman, that is a scary offense. Oh and technically the UCSB Libero was still at her old school when she made the Collegiate National Team, so Dvoracek was one of two.

There's always someone that comes out of nowhere (Dvoracek last season) and that might be Martinez or Williams. But right now Rasmussen & Dvoracek are the clear early favorites. I will add that for 2021 I think it's obvious Helvig will slide over to OH1 again and she's going to be a BALLER. Really excited to see her develop chemistry with Lang.

While Jordan should help, she still only hit .169 on the year in 2019 and had an error rate of nearly 11.8% (for reference only Niki Cavote was worse on the CP roster this year at 12.1%). And she can't pass. On 50 attempts last year she graded 1.48 & had a good pass percentage of 28%. Since Dvoracek doesn't pass Jordan will need to get DS'd. In regards to Stivers, she got to pass this year, and did OK, but her hitting was very limited (terminating 28.3% of the time) due to her injury. I know CP fans are obviously hoping she'll return to 2018 form, but that doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of questions and not many answers yet at OH.

Also just throwing this out ahead of time, but I'm calling LBSU as Big West champs 2021. Martinez, Williams & Hill will all be seniors. Tuaniga and Jaylen Jordan will have a year of competition underneath their belts and Joy will be able to add more good players who want to be part of this roster.
Not to mention Dvoracek, Skylar Williams, BvS & Jolie Rasmussen will all have graduated. That's not to say that Hawaii & Poly won't reload, but both of those rosters are losing big players after 2020, while a Beach don't peak until 2021. So that's my far-too-early prediction: Beach take the crown in 2021.

She is a 6’3” pin hitter that can really pound the ball. The program also brings in another 2021 pin hitter in six rotation player Erykah Lovett from Georgia. She is a bit undersized but a high quality and experienced hitter. Team will be loaded in 2021 as well as the following few years. However, 2020 is the year the program needs to make a jump in their quality of play and that should happen with Tuaniga as the floor general.

Future is bright for Beach and their improvement could help push Hawaii & CP in their efforts to get tournament bids in 2020, even if Beach eventually become the dominant power in 2021.

I am most hoping to UCSB to reload by getting a quality impact transfer. How likely will it be? Also Hawaii will not have a problem of getting quality pin hitters after Jolie and BVS leave so they should be fine in the next couple years. Consider them getting Jolie, BVS, and Choy after a season of getting losing on the first round in 2018. Rob is a great coach and recruiter. Im pretty sure many P5 athletes would want to play for her in the next years.

It will be interesting to see how Hawai’i handles losing 2 great setters.

It will be interesting to see how Hawai’i handles losing 2 great setters. I see Hawaii having some growing pains in the beginning of the season. Nothing beats experience to me at setting. Kate Lang comes in with a very good resume, but we'll see how she handles D1 volleyball. One thing going for Lang is that Hawaii returns some veterans players that will make it an easier transition for her to Division I volleyball.

Unless the new middle comes in and unseats a starter (unlikely) all her hitters know the offense. So she just has to get on their page. Obviously the other part of the connection, the first contact, has a few more questions. They lost some passers and will hopefully get some new faces in to help (Akana). Like network155 I expect the will be a period of adjustment, especially if they end up losing practice time over the summer, but I am sure they'll get it on track by conference play.

Although the two best players from 2019, Ruddins and Fleck, are both gone, arguably the most painful loss is Lovenberg. They do at least have other OHs and DSs on the roster, not All American or Collegiate National Team calibre, but they have bodies. Lovenberg was not only their best setter and their taller setter on an offense which is designed to be a 6-2.. They had no backup for her and there are no incoming setters in this class. I'm sure Lantagne-Welch is looking for a transfer but, due to roster mismanagement, she has no scholarships available for 2020 so there's no way she'll be able to compete with the other SoCal schools even if a top setter DOES end up in the portal. Basically, losing four of your five best players (two of them at zero notice) is hard to come back from. And now, with the absence of any practice time, it's only getting tougher. I'd love to be wrong about this but I see UCSB struggling throughout 2020.
