At the convention is Pittsburgh, they were really pumping growing the men's indoor game, by promoting more opportunities for boys in middle and high school. The group that Speraw is with, I think, went room to room at every classroom session all weekend, promoting men's and boys volleyball growth. Not sure if this is connected with this group that is trying to get the men's collegiate beach thing going; but I have a feeling it might be one or the other. It doesn't seem likely that there will be tremendous growth in the indoor game AND adding beach...IMHO

I think the real question is, if it does become a sponsored NCAA sport, who is going to be the premier journalist covering it? Travis with p1440/VolleyballMag, or Vinnie at OffTheBlock?

Beach Volleyball Consulting is a new company formed by two former USA Volleyball employees from their beach office. BVC claims they are worldwide leaders in developing Olympic caliber beach volleyball. The claim is of course unfounded and without any prior evidence to support it. It looks like a lot of bluster to me, but HOPEFULLY they can accomplish something of note, either in NCAA men's beach or otherwise, to establish themselves. beachvolleyballconsulting.com

Have we seen any Men's sports added in the past, say, 10 years?
With Title IX, and about 95 Football scholarships, I would find it hard to fathom adding more Men's scholarships to the total pool at a University. That would mean adding a similar number of Women's scholarships (or at least the same amount of additional budget to women's sports) to keep the balance even.
When USC needed to add some women's scholarships about four years ago, Haden had to pick between Women's Lacross, and Softball. There was never any discussion of adding Men's scholarships.
I remember when UCLA had to cut Men's Gymnastics, and I think Men's Swimming in 1994, because of Athletics budget shortfalls.\. They were also going to cut Women's Gymnastics to save money, but couldn't after it was realized tht would make them out of compliance with Title IX, that is, not have a lot more Men's scholarships than women's, b/c of Football.
Now, can you have a new NCAA sport that offers no scholarships at all?

The realistic answer is probably both, Travis will obviously know the game and have the credentials where Vinnie without any question has the Men's indoor game on lock down and could easily hire a beach beat.

Is there even Club-Level Men's Beach Vball anywhere?

Is there even Club-Level Men's Beach Vball anywhere? I started the Cal Poly BVB Club in 2009 and it was immediately evident then that guys worth playing against (SoCal) weren’t interested since they could enter any beach tournament on their own- they saw no need to start a BVB Club or be a part of one. I quickly abandoned trying to convince flakey college guys of the awesome possibility of getting everything paid for via fundraisers and hosting events, plus getting a good coach or two. With 400 paying members in 2009, I thought it was only natural to expand the platform to other schools, but at the end of the day, I’d rather be playing than talking to guys who were happy lone-wolfing it in SoCal. Sinjin’s setup is the only successful collegiate men’s thing going on as far as I know. Hopefully times are different, especially with all the women’s BVB facilities being built to piggy back from. Whatever develops on the men’s side, it needs to be student-driven at the club level.

Now, can you have a new NCAA sport that offers no scholarships at all? Any school can start any sport they want, and offer the full allotment of scholarships, somewhere in between, or none at all. If D1 or D2 schools want to start a men's indoor or beach program, they totally can, but they do not have to offer scholarships.

Men's DI/DII indoor can offer up to 4-1/2 scholarships amounts their players, and it is up to them to decide how. Women's DI indoor can give out 12, but they can't split it between players. There can only be 12 scholarship athletes on the team, and a school could give up to 12 full rides. For women's beach, they have up to 6 scholarships to split between their athletes however they choose. If men's beach came onto the scene, I would guess that it would be at 4-1/2 scholarships, just like indoor.
With all of the new beach facilities being built, I would hope that those west coast teams that already have men's indoor and women's beach would see the value. And if they have their season at the beginning of the academic year, they could have crossover athletes from their indoor teams play both. Looking at schools like Pepperdine and Long Beach State, they seem like perfect candidates (no football). We probably aren't anywhere close to an official NCAA championship, but if they can get enough schools to buy in, they could have an AVCA championship like women's beach had at the start. With the unprecedented growth of the women's game, there has to be a path to viability for the men, too.

I can see the men's beach game develop at a smaller level in the NCAA; I just don't see it taking off like it did for the women. Football, baseball & basketball will continue to take most of the male athletes, because there is a pipeline to being a domestic pro in those sports (however unlikely that is for most). I would imagine it to look a lot like the D2 beach game right now; there are a handful of teams, but it just isn't taking off like it did in D1. Yes, there are a TON of young dudes playing beach volleyball all across the country, but getting colleges to offer the sport will be tough, in addition to those dudes actually going to college to play it...most likely in a walk-on situation.

They need to put the HS beach community behind it.
I know the Women's side did it the other way, but you see how HS Girls beach is taking off.
