I regard this as positive news. Clearly, it's not realistic to hold the games at their original scheduled dates. But, selfishly as a fan, but even more so for all of the Olympians who dedicate their lives for the games & have limited chances to compete in them, I want to see the games postponed but not cancelled. This article, & particularly this quote, is encouraging. "The statement added that canceling the Games is not under consideration, saying that such an action 'would not solve any of the problems or help anybody.' " IOC sets four-week deadline on Games decision www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/28939429/ioc-sets-four-week-deadline-games-decision

This is a pretty big deal - Canada sends one of the biggest delegations to the Games, and if some other major players announce the same over the next few weeks - say, Germany, Italy, Spain or, of course, the U.S. - the pressure on the IOC to postpone will likely have passed the tipping point.

It looks like Australia is following Canada's decision. I'm ultimately hoping for just a postponement, not an outright cancellation.

What’s interesting is that Canada and Australia are out unless it is postponed until 2021. So a postponement to later in the year 2020 isn’t sufficient. Not sure that was a realistic option anyway.

It seems like the inevitable postponement may be affected by contractual issues, as in whether the IOC or Japan makes the first move may have financial implications. I think it was speculated that Wrestlemania was cancelled so late for similar reasons.

2020 Tokyo Olympics postponed to 2021. So much for that four week deadline to make a decision, lol. But it’s the right call.

You would think the absolute earliest would be for the games to begin in April/May. That is when the weather starts to get pleasant again in Toyko, with the least amount of possibility for weather restrictions.
This certainly helps those who were on the outside in looking to qualify. Who does it benefit the most?
