I dont' see how they don't cancel or severely limit attendance at large club tournaments.

They should just do whatever they did for the Spanish flu in 1918.
Seriously, has there ever been a wide-spread medical event like that that's threatened enough qualifiers to mess with nationals? Has it happened in any sport? Maybe fires in CA or snow in the NE could mess things up for a week or a month, but can you think of any other open-ended situation like this? I just spent the weekend on a band trip to Chicago, so I'm not the worrying type, but has a problem like this been tackled before?

I dont' see how they don't cancel or severely limit attendance at large club tournaments. I went to two SCVA mandatories this last weekend. As noted, they don't slap hands...as noted, it is awkward AF. We did get a recommendation to limit # of spectators, especially older people or those who would be at higher risk if infected. What I didn't see, which is very worrisome is any stepped up response cleaning. If they had hired 2 people to very visibly go around to all the most important surfaces (door handles, sink handles, table tops, benches, etc.) and did wipe down with disinfectant, it would make me feel more safe. I sure hope places like Disneyland have stepped up their disinfection practices. Tournament directors. Please step up your practices. There are a series of easy measures that could potentially help keep the sport from going into lockdown.

Over 18,000 people have died of influenza, in the U.S., this flu season. 18,000! No one should go out of their house, or work, or interact with anyone.

The young kids will be fine. The casualties will be the parents, grandparents, old fogey coaches, and people with preexisting underlying health issues.

That might be OK based on what I've been reading over in the "Parents Are The Worst" thread...

There's no vaccine for coronavirus yet. With a 10-15% fatality rate in people 70%, the numbers for coronavirus could potentially dwarf that.
We aren't worried about kids (and probably not their parents), it's the elderly and weaker people we are trying to protect.
Plus, there's the annoyance factor of your entire family having to self-quarantine for two weeks.

Seemed a few teams actually brought more family along than usual, it was packed. Our court did the awkward wave thing and the court next to us shook hands, so at the crossovers we had an awkward shake wave. š

To be fair, there may have been a little more focus on wipe down on Sunday, but well below what you would like to see. Also, no additional hand sanitizer stations or anything to wipe down balls. They did, however, start selling Dole Whip like you get at the Tiki Room at Disneyland...mmm...Dole Whip.

I think Iād prefer the Dole Whip.

All good points, though I am not sure what you are saying with the 10-15% fatality rate in people 70%? With a potential vaccine more than 18 months away it seems like we need to be a little more balanced in our approach to this as shutting down events and locking towns and cities away seem a little too Orwellian. Obviously it is not easy for people to do the right thing in terms of hygiene as is attested by the fact that more than 300,000 Americans have already been hospitalized with influenza this year on top of the 18k that have died. But the shutting down of society and our economy will have a much greater long term effect on lives and well being. I believe a calmer and more even approach would benefit all and would allow me to be able to buy toilet paper and paper towels without standing in line for 3 hours waiting for the new shipment to arrive at Costco or having to bid for Purell on Ebay.

I am all for an overabundance of caution; however, I feel like overreacting to this situation could be detrimental. If players, parents, and coaches take this whole situation day by day, we may avoid tourney cancellations. Obviously, local conditions and governing bodies will affect things, but all of our reactions could impact things as well.
