Wimbledon cancelled, NEQ postponed. Makes sense. I'd think tennis would be tailor-made for a made-for-TV special right now. Individual sport, nobody near each other. I'd think you'd get massive TV ratings since no other sports are running. Probably enough that you can charter players in from around the world.

ironhammer On the flip side, far more people die from antibiotic-resistant bacteria each year than ever died of measles or polio combined. I wouldn't say we have a great idea of how this (by definition, "novel,") virus will play at long-term and how the initial courses of treatment will influence its evolution. Of course, there are a lot of uncertainities. But scientists have discovered the mutuation rate for coronavirus is slower than flu, that is promising for vaccine development. Of course, whether and how long a vaccine can be developed is another question. As for measles and polio, they are close to eradication, so they aren't serious diseases for most of the world anymore. Anti-biotic resistant bacteria is caused by overuse of antibotics, so that can be tackled easier. Coronavirus is caused by close animal-to-human contact. Likely originated in bats, but it did not jump directly from bats to humans. There was an intermediary host in-between.

Flu has not been eradicated because a) its mutation rate is very high, requiring annual update of vaccines to be developed, so that is why an annual flu shot is required and b) flu vaccines not getting to everyone who needs it, especially those in the developing world and c) growing influence of anti-vaxxers who think vaccines harm more than help (if this pandemic says anything, it is to show these anti-vaxxers' ignorance and anti-science irrationality). Research has shown this coronavirus does not mutate anywhere as fast as the flu, meaning a vaccine, once it is developed and approved, will last a long time, even a whole life's time. This can be effective in drastically cutting down the number of cases. Taken from COVID 19 Canadian physician group "Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand. It has to do with RNA sequencing...i.e. genetics. Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year. You get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot. Novel viruses come from animals. The WHO tracks novel viruses in animals (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1, birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once one of these animal viruses mutates and starts to transfer from animals to humans...then it’s a problem. Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity. The RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it, so we can’t fight it off. Now...sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human. For years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human. Once that happens, we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, that’s what decides how contagious, or how deadly, it’s going to be. H1N1 was deadly, but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. Its RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too. Fast forward. Now, here comes this Coronavirus. It existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long. But one day, at an animal market in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person. But here is the scary part. In just TWO WEEKS, it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”. This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity), took off like a rocket. And this was because humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it. And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs. That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1, or any other type of influenza...this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater. And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain S and strain L...which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine. We really have no tools in our shed with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu. Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him till the Black Plague passed (honestly, I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation. And let me end by saying...right now it’s hitting older folks harder...but this genome is so slippery, if it mutates again (and it will), who is to say what it will do next. People should put an end to the habit of saying this coronavirus is the flu, they are completely separate diseases. But speaking of influenza (flu), it originated in animals too (zoonotic disease) before passing on to humans, but that happened ages ago (at least many thousands of years), so human has developed some immunity to it, whereas coronavirus is new.

www.cnn.com/travel/article/austin-spring-breakers-coronavirus-trnd/index.htmlDozens of spring breakers from Texas boarded a plane for fun and came home with coronavirus. About 70 people in their 20's chartered a plane from Austin, Texas, to Mexico for spring break two weeks ago. They went against the advice of White House officials who asked that people avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 and nonessential air travel. Now 44 of those people have tested positive for coronavirus -- all of them University of Texas at Austin students

I guess some people just don't get it until the virus hit them on the head.

When I was in college, I spent spring breaks learning some programming language (e.g., Pascal) that was new to me, practiced the piano in marathon sessions, and fixed a variety of mechanical/electrical equipment around the house with my bare hands. (Well, with tools.) Also, I read a lot of poetry because, you know, it was different from my normal studies. If I had questions about poetry or specific poems, e.g., Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott, I'd just ask some girl. You geeks should try that. It's the Kryptonite for girls and women.
Never went to beach towns in Florida, Texas, Mexico, or any other popular Spring Break destinations.

It was announced today that California schools will not open the remainder of the school year. Kansas closed all K-12 schools for the remainder of the year on March 18. Fascinating to see how states have acted differently. On March 18 - there were 7,700 positive cases and 112 deaths in the US. The State of KS at that time had 16 positives and 1 death.

Fascinating to see how states have acted differently. On March 18 - there were 7,700 positive cases and 112 deaths in the US. The State of KS at that time had 16 positives and 1 death. States reacting differently , having to compete for vents/PPE, reluctance for our President to enact the Federal Govt and influencers/Right wing news outlets denying the magnitude of this virus have and are creating a horrific problem. Dr. Fauci has increased security detail due to increased death threat! Fauci's guidance to Trump for the country to remain as locked down as possible to help control the virus spread has not earned fans among some fervent right-wing voices. Kelly from Kansas recognized this problem early and did the responsible thing. The jerkoff Governors of Florida abd Texas (and Lt. Gov! Idiot) have monumental problems on their hands for waiting so long. I was beyond "fascinated" 2 months. The underlying problems of disparity in healthcare, education, wages and between and within states are now fully exposed. In 2 weeks 10 million people have filed for unemployment. 10 million! Some areas expect to get to 25-30% unemployment. Our American "individualism" ethos is just the opposite of what we need facing this catastrophe....and yet some people in power are so afraid to share the blanket. Until WE and US emerges, "fascination" will continue it seems (smh). Our sport will see clubs fold and high level bankruptcies declared. Take a look and watch the USOC over the next months as they and underlying bodies wither on the vine. (HINT) Again I would wager 10-15% of people here think I'm overreacting, 35-40% want to believe it will dissolve and we will be on the road to recovery by June but a growing 50% are feeling the effects personally in their pockets and jobs and fully understand where we are headed. I will say this now.....we will need some heavy hitters to step up and personally keep the USAV afloat. Do the math when you lose the income sponsors, Qualifers, Bid Tourneys, and Both Nationals.....its devastating..... Wait...what? ?? 🤯
