I think Coronavirus is here to stay; but hopefully a vaccine is to come into use to save the day! They haven't gotten rid of flu yet which is also a virus! Some baddies we have to live with! which probably means we will have to get a Corona shot every year; same as flu! Hopefully they will invent one soon enough! You got to remember; a virus is not a living thing, so you can't kill it, but you can render it unabled! The ultra violet rays of summer hopefully will help! GO HUSKERS

This is just personal opinion, but I feel the NCAA, ESPN and the powers that be wouldn't have been as swift to cancel football season if that was occurring today. March Madness is as big of a deal for the NCAA as football is. If they cancelled the basketball tournament, I bet they'd cancel football too if this type of thing had happened during football season. That being said, I'd be surprised if this thing hasn't dropped out of total panic mode by the end of summer. While this may effect spring practices/scrimmages for both FB and VB, I'd be willing to bet that fall camps/practices will start around their usual times. Though there may be some additional health precautions put in place. (maybe they will actually make some effort to sanitize the balls as was joked about on a thread on here a while back)

Well, volleyball has one thing going for it: It's during football season. This is just personal opinion, but I feel the NCAA, ESPN and the powers that be wouldn't have been as swift to cancel football season if that was occurring today. So, they aren't going to cancel volleyball if they don't cancel football. To my knowledge, it's unclear whether warmer weather will slow the virus' progression. That information is just not known yet since the onset of this virus occurred in the winter and spring months. www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/03/12/world/science-health-world/will-heat-stop-coronavirus/#.Xm2pQOtKh-UThat being said, there's talks of football season starting but possibly not finishing as we get into the cooler months. nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/why-experts-doubt-warm-weather-will-slow-coronavirus-spread.htmlThe most important things we can all do today to protect our precious volleyball season is 1) Protect ourselves and 2) Prevent the spread of misinformation where we can. Be responsible and stay home as much as possible. Wash your hands. We live in a world where every image or meme posted on social media is taken as fact. Question items that have no sources. There's an image going around for example that coronavirus lives in the throat for 4 days so, if you get a sore throat, you should gargle salt water to kill it. This in fact has no basis in reality. Imagine if folks think this is true and that they've cured themselves then go around infecting everyone. If you have a political bone in your body (or even a bone with some empathy), consider the following: 1) Call your Senator so they support the coronavirus aid package on Monday. While it's by no means comprehensive enough (it only applies to about 20% of the American workforce), whatever can do to keep as many sick people at home and fed, the better. www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-vote-friday-democrats-coronavirus-relief-package-n11583062) Consider voting for candidates up and down the ballot who support greater access to healthcare (less hoops, less cost). We're only as healthy as our weakest neighbor. It's not ok to cut costs in healthcare and education when we have a military that can blow up the moon (hyperbole). 3) Consider admonishing those responsible for cutting the US pandemic response team and having poor testing capabilities available. In that regard, once testing is available, get tested if you feel you may have it so you can be treated and self quarantine appropriately. www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-testing-covid-19-tests-per-capita-chart-us-behind-2020-3 theintercept.com/2020/03/14/trump-says-no-idea-pandemic-response-team-disbanded-thats-true/Aaaand now I'll step off my soapbox. Seriously. There’s a reason politics were banned from this forum. I don't get why you suggest that SecGator's post is overly political. It was pretty mild. Now if he had said something like, "the leaders in the current administration who cut funding and staff for pandemic response and who denied there was a problem and who lied day after day to the public and who were meeting with Diamond and Silk and golfing and Tweeting instead of doing their job...those people, should be tried and eligible for summary execution." Now if he had said that, then, sure....too political maybe. I'm in the Seattle area, and have no patience for those who are downplaying the danger of what is happening or still propping up the incompetent and corrupt leaders they've voted for. I'm reminded of the Maggie Smith poem that warns us that pretty much half the world is terrible. I'll just keep trying to see the good half and trying to ignore the idiots among us, including on this message board.

By the way, to the OP's original question: The 2020 VB season is likely already over. This fine Minnesota doctor was asked today about the president's contention that this might go all the way to July or August. His response, "It's going to blow right past that."

Lots of referees who rely on officiating as extra income to supplement their other jobs. And I know a few who make their living officiating year round.

Its cousin is SARS. And we all know how deadly that catastrophic virus was......

China has this thing under control now. It took 3-4 months and insane application of resources. They sat on information and it exploded out of control, but they got it under control eventually with ridiculous effort. A number of western governments are not doing as well. Italy just surpassed China in mortalities. In the US we now realize that this thing was much worse than the early numbers indicated. As testing ramps up here in NY, case numbers are exploding. Those cases have been in the community spreading the virus so it looks like things will get really really bad.
I'm at Stony Brook. We have a university hospital and the word from there is grim. They are preparing for armegeddon. All our labs on campus are donating every piece of personal protective gear we have to the hospital, because there just isn't enough. People are stealing them from the hospital. The dorms will be retasked for extra quarantine/treatment space, including the gym and practice fields which are being vetted as field hospitals. I'm happy they are taking the preparation seriously, although I worry that the real shortage is trained personnel, and I'm not sure what we can do about that, especially as they get sick as well.
Thinking about the volleyball season. You figure the pandemic sweep is about 4 months, if we are lucky. Quarantine is 21 days (now) added to the end of the pandemic cycle. You also guess that all of these spaces will have to be decontaminated before being returned to their original purpose. Given the typical timeline of these disease, in NY it won't be until August when these spaces can be used again. That could save some of the season here, but the problem is that other parts of the country are behind NY and will clear later. This is a big country. For the volleyball season to progress the disease has to clear everywhere.
I'm not hopeful.

Football is the domino effect. If there is no college football, there is a lot of money being lost and sports programs being negatively impacted. Right now I can see a late start as a possibility but not a strong one.

I think fall 2020 is very much at risk for college and high school sports, as the weather will be cooling and CV-19 will likely be heating up again. The only way I think there is a fall 2020 season is if there are effective anti-virals against CV-19. There will be no vaccine until the end of the year at the soonest.
2020 is in jeopardy.

China has this thing under control now. Can I have a little of what you're smoking? It's easier when citizens don't have rights and the government can come weld your door shut, sealing you in your apartment. www.cbc.ca/player/play/1703503427818

Nature News link. No new cases in a China yesterday. Italy surpassed China in accumulated deaths. The point of my comment is that the sweep is 3-4 months long if you manage it. We’re not going to do what China did. South Korea is a model we could have followed. They have done a good job controlling spread and keeping deaths down. But they went the route of massive testing. We did not. We’ll be lucky if we see China’s outcome. China has this thing under control now.
