There are a lot of elderly players on the AVP and with this season in jeopardy combined with the inability to really train, I expect a good number of players may be considering retirement. I guess one positive - sort of anyway - is that the career most would be moving into - coaching - is no more available than playing is right now. I guess no new careers are really that possible
Still I think its likely around 50% of these guys retire:
Hyden - Losing his last event in the finals 17-15 seems like poetic justice for Hyden who was so often an extremely close second. His career is one of the great VB whatifs. "Whatif he had been a little farther along when he teamed with Lambo? What if he hadnt taken that unfortunate international break? What if Phil had called him instead of Nick?" etc. I guess living in TN it isnt as if he practices anyway but he still feels like the most likely to just hang it up
Lee - David was just starting his career and really needed to develop every skill but blocking. Unless he is training on the sly, his progress is going to be severely retarded. I think he probably packs it in.
Phil - Who knows. Still can be the best US player on a good day, but he wasnt exactly gung ho about 2020
Reid - I think this is partnership dependent. David Lee with a full offseason together is one thing, David Lee as of last year? Its likely he gets another shot at the partner carousel since some changes are almost certain but at some point I think Reid faces the music. I wonder if he would have even come back for 2020 if he had not won Manhattan?
Rafu - I think he may be on the same path as his ex-partner McColloh. I doubt he retires but playing part time seems likely.
Kolinske - He finally had a little success last year on the AVP but he has been struggling and grinding without results for a long time. Not that old though
Also how many of the Q guys, especially those who moved to Socal for no other reason than to play VB are going to give it up?

I think there are a couple you’re missing as well.
Ed: wouldn’t be shocked to see him rafu style semi retirement if not full on retirement.
Ricardo: wouldn’t shock me for this to be the nail in his coffin.
Rosie: will he maintain shape enough to come back if the season gets flat out cancelled? I would love to see Rosie and Gibb reunite for nostalgia sake once Gibbs international aspirations are over.
Jake Gibb: if Taylor dumps him, what then? I think he’ll still keep playing avp for another quad maybe but we’ll see.
Casey Patterson: honestly i think he’s on the cusp of a sharp decline. Used to think it’d be 2-3 years down the road but a cancelled season with 4 kids to feed could make him shift gears and not look back.
Ian Satterfield: anybody know if he’s even still interested in playing? Frankly last tournament he played he didn’t look great, getting served every ball playing with Burik and looked kinda out of shape.
Ryan Doherty: already displayed significantly less interest in playing and starting to put on weight.
Ty Loomis: 40 years old, I think he’ll keep playing till he dies personally. Dipping into the qualifier seems to have never bothered him in the past.

What a waste of a post G2, do you think everyone is suddenly giving up in life because of this bizarre event? None of this will happen, every player here will be playing in whichever AVP tourney ends up being first this year.

He'll still be able to play in a number of AVPs is my guess though indoor season is in the fall so practices must be taking place later summer.

Name your price!

Have you seen that Trump’s emphasis is still getting people back to work at whatever cost, not fighting the virus at whatever cost. Frankly if the outbreaks are still happening mid June you’ll probably see the entire season cancelled. Let me be clear: I absolutely don’t want to turn this into a political discussion and don’t want to start arguing whether they’re well thought out or backwards. Trumps priorities are 1. Get people back to work and then 2. Fighting the virus. But given that different areas keep exploding, I wouldn’t be shocked if they cancel the season in mid June.

Name your price! For the record I think Kolinske is a big reach. Satterfield was a big reach on my part. Throw those 2 out, and the question is how many of the others. Somewhere in the 50% range I’d say either take more of a Rafu approach where they’re semi retired, and maybe a couple retire outright.

I think if the "back to work" stuff happens it would be unfair to judge these predictions because I assume a lot of players would simply not play to preserve their own health. Certainly some would cut back on international and cross country travel

It may be but Billy has been grinding it out, putting in the time, the travel etc, for several years now with virtually no success. He has been on tour since 2014 and has never: 1) Made 20k in prize money in a season 2) Made a final - not counting the One Star He is 33 and just started a family. There is a lot more that comes into play that I simply dont know, financial resources to draw on, other options he could purse, the value of travelling to the same events his wife plays in, how much he actually loves the game. Etc. I hope he keeps playing because I like his approach and I like depth in the middle of the field.
