Wrote an article about the Great Depression and WW2 rationing and the lessons learned from that difficult time in history. Will we garden and can again? Butcher our own food? Will we eventually be rationed to the extent we were in WW2.Food for thought.

Not to worry. It's a hoax. Remember?
Seen it on the tv.

That there are boundaries, and if we violate them, the virus will spread and people will die. That we are all possible vectors, many asymptomatic, which allow the virus to spread EASILY from host to host. That we are all data points that either prove or disprove the simulation and mathematical modeling that predicts virus spread rates.

It's very possible we -- Americans -- will realize we really don't need all the stuff we think we need. Or to do all the stuff we have been doing.
Unfortunately, this will not bode well for the economy. It may do wonders for the world. And morals.

Unfortunately, this will not bode well for the economy. It may do wonders for the world. And morals. I'm skeptical that would last long, if it happens at all. The millenials I know are less into "stuff" partly because of climate change and partly because all they need is a phone . If we see a "stuff" change I doubt it will be related to COVID-19. I can see some significant, though superficial, things happening broadly, like people not shaking hands and/or washing their hands more thoroughly. What we learn as a culture will depend a lot on how the history of this time is taught in schools and at home. I'm not optimistic about the country as a whole but am hopeful that some areas will learn the important lessons.

Oh Tommy..The hate lives on doesn’t it? No, it's more sadness. Sad at the realization that I walked this earth for decades assuming the great majority of humans - especially Americans - were good, honest, decent, hard-working people of upstanding values. Only to have confirmed late in life that way too many are really vapid bigots who don't believe in science or expertise or even the true teachings of Christ. Kids in cages: no problem. Paying off porn-stars: no problem. Making fun of the disabled: ha, ha, ha. And now, dividing a country by name-calling mayors and governors; Calling a pandemic a hoax; dismantling a government department that could have helped mitigate this disaster; and as the death count rises, bragging about his TV ratings. I've read at least a dozen books on Hitler and Nazi Germany and was always somewhat puzzled how the people of such a great nation could have fallen for such a loud-mouthed dupe. No longer am I puzzled. But at least Hitler had a somewhat impressive level of organization and competence. I'll likely leave this as my final post on VT, unless the mods justifiably delete it. Mostly because I just can't muster much interest in this sport right now, but also because I no longer have the tolerance to interact with the morons and jackals who blindly follow the ass in chief. The best to all.

I learned that I should’ve bought that bulk box of Quaker Oats Old Fashioned Oatmeal when I had the chance when I was at Costco 3 weeks ago. I was so blasé about it at the time. Now, I’m going to have to stand in line.

I think I know why and I won't comment on it (here) beyond this, but I sincerely believe it's because they think "smart" people look down on them. There has always been an anti-intellectual element to this country, going all the way back to the Revolutionary War. It's never gone away.
It's not Trump. It's the so-called "elites." They hate "them" and hate being made to feel inferior. That's why it's so easy to reject science, expertise, art, etc.
It's sad. It's pathetic. It's infuriating. But it is.

Oh boy, I should’ve known better than to ask a legitimate question despite it being three years since the election. The problem certainly doesn’t live with me, but is with you guys and you’re bitterness toward the election. I call it the Jimmy Kimble syndrome, the assumption that you are much smarter than the average person and you cannot believe that so many people don’t believe what you do. You assume the Trump supporters are somehow less intelligent than you are and that’s why he was elected. That can be the only reason after all right? This is a perfect example, when posed with a perfectly interesting question, eventually it’s going to turn nasty and bitter through no fault of my own? Why aren’t you people capable of having a conversation without talking about Trump? But can any of you have some self reflection and ask why you fail to understand a few logical reasons why he was elected? Of course you can’t. You’re narcissistic so that’s not possible.

I hope it teaches us that we are all in this together. And not just Americans. The whole world. And not just this virus. I fear it won't. But that's being discussed in another thread.
I do think it's teaching anyone paying attention just how important are teachers, health care workers, farmers, supply-chain workers everywhere. I also hope people appreciate good government. They tend to take that for granted too.

I do think it's teaching anyone paying attention just how important are health care workers... Agree 100%. Sadly, I fear the nations of the world are at each other's throat. US and China are busy blaming each other. Iran is saying this virus is a US conspiracy. As for healthcare workers, the US healthcare system was in need of a major overhaul even before the outbreak, but I fear as soon as the outbreak is over, people will forget it. Or am I too cynical?
