It was the right thing to do.
Spring sports are the least popular anyway, among fans. Lacrosse is a niche sport out east, Baseball and Softball are sparsely followed outside of the deep South, and few if any casual spectators tune into Track, Golf, Tennis, etc.
Sand VB sounds pretty awesome, but also probably pretty regional; West Coast +Nebraska sorta thing.
I feel bad for the winter sports teams that won their Conference Title unexpectedly, but won't have a chance to seal the deal in the National Tourney. OSU W Ice Hockey, for example.

Softball used to be West Coast dominant. Only recently did the South start its takeover. Softball gets excellent TV coverage. Every single tournament match is on ESPN3, and when they get down to 16 every game is televised. I wish volleyball could get there!

I was interested in which sports are classified as winter and which are spring. I found this list, which I will summarize below:
Spring (waiver): Women's Beach Volleyball
Men's Volleyball Baseball Softball Outdoor Track and Field Golf Tennis Lacrosse Women's Rowing Women's Water Polo
Winter (no waiver): Basketball Ice Hockey Indoor Track and Field
Gymnastics Swimming and Diving Skiing Rifle Fencing
Women's Bowling
Men's Wrestling
Fall sports like football and women's volleyball had all completed their seasons, so they were unaffected (at least directly) by this announcement.

But every match of the NCAA Beach Championship is televised!

You also don't think all of the 1st/2nd round matches could end up on WatchESPN? Would only be streaming for those matches, even the sweet 16. Any non conference men's basketball game between any teams will attract more viewers than any Women's Volleyball matches. Sad, but true.
