"Bluesette"
I had never heard of this jazz standard until yesterday evening. Quite catchy. I'm going to learn it.

One of the greatest.
"The Girl From Ipanema" (by Antonio Carlos Jobim)
Another version, this time by Frank Sinatra and the composer himself Antonio Carlos Jobim:

I love it when musicians cross genres to sing songs NOT from their genre. Here, the Rolling Stones covers the jazz standard, "The Nearness of You."
And here's Nat King Cole with the same song from 1957:

I've been teaching my wife jazz piano for the past 2 weeks. We're going through all the most basic chords in all keys -- minor 7, dominant 7, major 7 -- as well as ii-V-I chord progression exercises. She's a good student but has a really bad attitude. I don't think spouses make good teacher-student pairs. Sunday is graduation. Good riddance!
LOL!

Got this book in the mail. When I first started playing jazz on the piano, reharmonization was not something that was big on my radar. I was content to play the chords as written plus some improvisation and fills. I'm not exactly sure when it happened but the more I played, the stronger the desire I had for reharmonizing almost everything on the lead sheet to make the music sound more interesting. I'm probably reharmonizing too much, something I did with film editing. (I was adding all sorts of visual effects and transitions effects. Kinda over the top. Almost tasteless.) Anyway, great book. I even learned something on chapter 1.

That Reharmonization book has been an eye-opener. Although the book is not about playing music by ear or playing without any sheet music/lead sheet, I believe I can actually play any song without any written music in front of me.

I recently heard a tune by the Tomasz Stanko Quintet and checked out some of Stanko's music on YouTube. Been really enjoying it and thought I'd share one of those live performances on the cool cats thread.

Hi there I'm a jazz bassist since 32 years, although I must say that, like many electric bass players, I'm more into jazz-funk, soul-jazz, latin-jazz you know... anything that "grooves". I've been doing this professionnaly and as a teacher until the pandemic crashed the business (I must say the last year before the pandemic wasn't so good though, I was struggling to pay the bills).
In my everyday HIIT playlist for my home workout I've got this insane tune from Groove Collective, a bunch of NYC guys who started in the 90's and got to record with Chucho Valdes (one of my fav pianists with Michel Camilo and Michel Petrucciani)
