Seems Berlin Recycling has been Team USA for the past few years, with five on the roster last season: www.berlin-recycling-volleys.de/index.php/en/team/23-hauptkategorien/team/4672-spieler1718-en.htmlSo I figured we needed a thread to discuss this league. Apfelbach, Karl (TV Rottenburg, Germany) Durkin, Leo (SVG Luneburg, Germany) Ensing, Kyle (SCC Berlin, Germany) Garbowski, Kamil (FC Schuttorf 09, Germany) Hancock, David (TV Bliesen, Germany) Jendryk II, Jeffrey (SCC Berlin, Germany) Kessel, Cody (SCC Berlin, Germany) Lewis, Dennis (VBC Kaiserslautern e.V., Germany) Michelau, Michael (SVG Luneburg, Germany) Patch, Benjamin (SCC Berlin, Germany) Penning, Mitchell (TV Rottenburg, Germany) Penrose, Jalen (TSV Herrsching e.V., Germany) Petty, Gregory (TV Buhl Volleyball, Germany) Schmidt, Brendan (VfB Friedrichshafen, Germany) Tareuinio, Steven (VC Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany) Wieczorek, David (TSV Giesen, Germany) Worsley, Joseph (VfB Friedrichshafen, Germany) Frank, William (Chemie Volley Mitteldeutschland, Germany) Hatch, John (SCC Berlin, Germany) Wexter, Michael (TSV Giesen, Germany)

Of those players mentioned, the following are in the top division: Apfelbach, Karl (TV Rottenburg, Germany) Durkin, Leo (SVG Luneburg, Germany) Ensing, Kyle (SCC Berlin, Germany) Jendryk II, Jeffrey (SCC Berlin, Germany) Kessel, Cody (SCC Berlin, Germany) Michelau, Michael (SVG Luneburg, Germany) Patch, Benjamin (SCC Berlin, Germany) Penning, Mitchell (TV Rottenburg, Germany) Penrose, Jalen (TSV Herrsching e.V., Germany) Petty, Gregory (TV Buhl Volleyball, Germany) Schmidt, Brendan (VfB Friedrichshafen, Germany) Wieczorek, David (TSV Giesen, Germany) Worsley, Joseph (VfB Friedrichshafen, Germany) Hatch, John (SCC Berlin, Germany) Wexter, Michael (TSV Giesen, Germany) Berlin was the class of the league this year. It was not one of their stronger teams in recent history, but they were dominant domestically. It would not surprise me to see Patch leave. Hopefully he gets a chance to redeem himself in a top league after not doing so well his first attempt in Italy. I was surprised in Leo Durkin this year. He had missed a year after college and found himself starting.

Any reason why Berlin is so Yank heavy? Obviously it works for them, but that's a lot on one team.
One thing about Germany - they don't have the non-EU restrictions that Italy and most of the rest of Europe have. From my experience working in soccer Belgium is pretty lax as well, but there was a minimum salary for non-EU players, but after three years you also got a Belgian passport. Denmark - was a salary requirement, but not as high.
== Durkin - interesting story, but talent wins out, and we've got lots of talent running around the US.

I think it goes back to Lebedew. When he went from Lennik in Belgium to Berlin, he took Touzinsky with him. At that point he added Kawika Shoji, then Erik Shoji, Paul Lotman (came after Touzinsky and K. Shoji left). There was a time (I think the 16-17 year) that had no American players. Then Kyle Russell found his way there.
The last two years have kind of been an anamoly, but I feel the club has a good relationship with American players and agents. I feel the last two years have been a mix of guys who were coming from not the most successful stints in bigger leagues (Russell and Watten were in Poland, Patch was in Italy), and guys who were starting or moving up (Kessel had been at other clubs in Germany, Jendryk was starting his career but will be moving on to Poland, JT Hatch was also moving up from playing in the Middle East). Raison Loimu in Finland had a similar pipeline for a while.

If am one of the other sporting directors in the league I'd make a trip over to the States and pick up 2-3 players every year. I don't think volleyball has transfer fees, mostly 1-2 year contracts, or so it appears. Do well move to a bigger league, or get a better deal.
Found a WWK Volleys Herrsching v Berlin Recycling from a couple of years back, the gym looks like it would be packed with 1,000 people. While Berlin looks like they bring in a great. crowd.

Berlin just loves Americans. Watch out for Gasman to land in Berlin next season to replace outgoing Le Goff.

As per Spikenet: COVID-19 continues to hit volleyball in big ways. Bundesliga will probably have 3 teams withdrawing from competing in the 2020-2021 because of the economic toll the virus has caused. The german league will try to keep their league running with 10 teams. #TheSpikeNet #GrowTheSport Heitec Volleys TVR 1861 Alpen Volleys www.flashscore.com/volleyball/germany/1-bundesliga/standings/

Alpen Volleys is a surprise. Rottenburg decided weeks ago they were withdrawing. I spoke with Lebedew who said that they have never been a successful club and saw the writing on the wall. They knew they would not be able to hang in there and be successful, so they are dropping.
I wonder if there will be teams moving up from Bundesliga 2 or if it will just be a smaller league.

The tweet sounded like they would go with 10 teams. Rottenburg - interesting. I'm very interested in the business of volleyball in Europe. I'm curious if they follow the same rules that soccer does over there - doesn't allow for individual ownership of more than 49% of the club. If it doesn't, would be an interesting play to buy a club over there and make a challenge for Berlin. Would have to be in a major city to attract the sponsorships needed to compete.

The more I think about it, these teams dropping down or out makes sense. As I mentioned earlier, Rottenburg has never found success. Heitec was just newly promoted and never gained footing in the top division.
Hypo Tirol Alpen Volleys are an interesting case. They were the top club (or perennially near the top) in Austria. They linked up with a club in TSV Unterhaching (left with a vacuum after Generali Haching went under a few years ago). So they join the Bundesliga for a few years. They played most of their matches in Innsbruck, Austria. They stated they thought they would have the sponsorships to grow their budget by 30 percent, but that was not going to happen. So TSV Unterhaching will continue in the Bundesliga 2 next year and Hypo Tirol will take part in Austria’s second division.

He is not an American, but played NCAA. Stijn Van Tilburg is leaving Sora in Italy to play at Giesen.
Not sure Wexter will stay.
