The virus won't be under control until herd immunity. The Swedes took a different approach, had initially much higher deaths than their neighbors, but they are now quickly approaching herd immunity. Stockholm and other major population areas are projecting near 100 percent herd immunity within the next 3 to 4 weeks. Pay me now or pay me later. I have been watching Sweden closely. They implement a model we could consider in the future: social distancing to some degree, wearing mask if possible, and volunteering isolation for high risk group. I hope we will have better testing/tracing than Sweden. They only test people who are sick. They do have a high death rate 12.3% and number of death per million population. They mandate gathering less than 50 people. No such thing as AAU tournament for sure. Over half of Sweden’s houses are single-person dwellings. That’s a huge difference between us and them that allows a built-in distancing. Also, their people have proven to be much more responsible.

I understand the pain. Even though I still have work, my spouse lost job because of Covid. We are also under financial stress. I am optimistic that we will back to some normalcy especially several other countries achieved the goal with good testing/tracing/social distancing plan. But rush into opening without a solid coping plan will set us back another 1-2 months. Our kids will end up staying at home for fall semester without high school or college volleyball. That is another reason why we should not attend AAU if Covid is not under control in US. The virus won't be under control until herd immunity. Stockholm and other major population areas are projecting near 100 percent herd immunity within the next 3 to 4 weeks. Pay me now or pay me later. What? They're predicting a quarter of swedes will have had the virus by May 1, and think best-case half of Stockholm. That's not herd immunity, and their death rate will continue to be higher than comparable countries.

So are you coming to AAU National Championship? If you have a daughter, are you sending your DD to attend and play without mask? I wonder how many teams from NY or NJ will be there. FYI, the IHME model has New York at 0 deaths after Memorial Day. Everyone that believes that NYC will have no COVID related deaths after Memorial Day raise their hand...

Cloth masks are certainly less effective than surgical masks or N95s, but they still are more beneficial than nothing.

Are you aware that a large percentage of the masks that you see people wearing are ineffective in filtering out the coronavirus? This shows exactly how incompetent our federal government is. For example, South Korea and Taiwan have a national registered program to assign 2 masks per week per person. Their pharmacies sell KF-94 masks which is equivalent to N95. The phone app will tell you where to get your masks. In US, many medical professionals are using one N95 per 1-2 weeks. We also recycle and clean them after usage. However, cloth mask is still better than no mask for sure.

Hey I’m not an infectious disease expert I’m just repeating what the Swedish officials are saying: www.cnbc.com/2020/04/22/no-lockdown-in-sweden-but-stockholm-could-see-herd-immunity-in-weeks.html

One other major difference in favor of the Swedes is they eat a lot of those Swedish fish.

BTW, the death rate in Sweden is above 12% and high death rate per million people. Even Sweden choose to let the virus “wash” the community, they still mandate no gathering more than 50 people. So no country in the world is allowing things like AAU to happen except US. You wonder why we lead the world in infection.

Even Desantis, in all his infinite wisdom, has to know that you can't hold this kind of event.

Cloth masks are certainly less effective than surgical masks or N95s, but they still are more beneficial than nothing. Surgical masks are no more effective against viruses than your average homemade cloth mask. And all masks become quickly comprised the longer the user wears it. Masks are meant to put on and leave on. Constant on/off allows the fingers to contaminate the mask surface that then becomes a means of constantly pulling breathing air across the contaminated mask surface that to begin with was incapable of stopping the virus due to its porosity. But if it makes you feel better, knock yourself out.

Ah, but if the tournament is officially open and yet teams don't come, have they already paid non-refundable entrance fees?

I’m sorry I find holding this tournament that early completely irresponsible
