Due to adding two sports this past year, I doubt very much Akron will cut sports. The bad news, I am guessing, will be huge budget cuts and increased need/requirement for fundraising.

It is still premature to add Akron. If one was to dig into the communication from the school, the idea is to consolidate administrative functions and reduce spending. The school was looking for a 20% reduction in spending on the university side. In addition, if you put them out there then you would also need to put the rest of the MAC out there as well. As karellen said, there might be reductions on budget but no where near being cut.

By the way, while I think this list is interesting and useful, it also does impact recruiting for those schools that aren't closing and people are just speculating about the future. This is kind of like the Jobs thread where people will speculate about coaches leaving. The difference is that the recruits might still consider a school if the coach leaves but will definitely drop a school from their list if they think the school is cancelling the volleyball program.

FIU cuts men's indoor track I fail to see the logic here. Indoor and outdoor track is usually coached by the same people, and those that do indoor track usually compete in the outdoor track. AND the facility is there for the women to use...so why is FDU cancelling Men’s Indoor Track?

Purely a guess here but if I look at the schedules for the last two years, outdoor pretty much just stays in Florida and the southeast. Indoor goes to Indiana, Cleveland and Boston. So I would guess it is travel costs.

I seem to recall Akron being one of those schools that I always heard mentioned in articles talking about schools whose athletic departments were operating on huge deficits (even before all the covid craziness). Seems illogical to add new sports in that situation. Or maybe my brain was confusing them with other MAC schools.

They are clearly looking at every dollar and cent, and it might be the easiest way to save money without having to let any coaches or student-athletes go (though I wouldn't be surprised if they cut the coaches' pay). A lot of track programs also really don't care about the indoor season (focusing on XC & Outdoors), compete the bare minimum and only really participate in it to so they can train with their athletes "in season" - so probably the path of minimal disruption if they can cut some operating costs.

I get what you’re saying, and if FDU does cut the men’s indoor track season, wouldn’t that open them up to a Title IX complaint if the women’s indoor track season continues?

NDNU’s athletics has ended Spring 2020, academics will end in 2021

I imagine women's was only not cut because they are needed to balance Title IX considerations from other parts of the Department.

Wait, I think I heard Nebraska is cutting their volleyball program. Maybe even Texas, Stanford and Penn State.

Looking at the number of sports alone, more of women’s teams than men’s. Participation-wise, not sure.

Ohio Dominican will not allow fans to attend athletic events, just students, faculty and family.
