I have followed the cruel ravages of this viral pandemic as it has crossed the globe. Now comes the news that COVID-19 has taken the Tiffin University Equestrian Program from us...... When will the horrible devastation cease? Until SCAD cancels theirs... it isn’t real... SCAD has athletics? Wow, you really do learn something new every day.

I imagine women's was only not cut because they are needed to balance Title IX considerations from other parts of the Department. Looking at the number of sports alone, more of women’s teams than men’s. Participation-wise, not sure. If a school has football, then there should always be more women's sports than men's, because it takes multiple sports to balance out the 85 scholarship-receiving (at least at the Div. I level) football players (plus however many walk-ons). (unless that school's enrollment has a much higher percentage of male students, which might be the case with some of the military academies) If a school doesn't have football, the numbers can be more even.

Worth noting that they were the only school in their conference that sponsored football, requiring them to play that one sport in a different conference with more travel.

Heard Florida Tech is cutting football After what adding football did to the sports they already sponsored (gutted scholarships and ft staff positions) the AD and President should both lose their jobs. Their vb coach is one of the most outstanding people I know... the fact that she stayed after they cut ALL of her scholarships and staff shows a loyalty to her athletes and the sport that is rare and to be commended!

abc7.com/education/csu-campuses-to-remain-closed-through-fall-semester/6176291/The California State University (CSU) system said it plans to cancel all in-person classes for the fall and to continue instruction online. There will be some limited exceptions for in-person classroom activities that cannot be delivered virtually. CSU Chancellor Timothy White made the announcement Tuesday, which will affect all 23 of its universities. "This virtual planning approach for the next academic year is necessary because of the evolving data surrounding the progression of COVID 19," White explained to CSU trustees. White said non-partisan researchers and health experts forecast additional waves of infection coupled with the flu season in the fall. He added the public immunity rate is very low, and it is not likely a vaccine will be developed during the academic year. CSU campuses moved to virtual learning in March due to coronavirus pandemic. To mitigate the spread of the virus, the university closed a majority of its campus to students and canceled graduation.

While it doesn't seem like there has been an official announcement, Cal State chancellor said this in a faculty senate Q&A:
"MANY OF THE CSU ARE IN THE CCAA CONFERENCE. THEY HAVE DECIDED LAST WEEK AS PRESIDENTS, THERE WILL NOT BE A FALL SPORT SEASON."
This is slightly ambiguous if it means the entire CCAA or just the Cal State schools.

Well it looks like they won’t be the only ones:
At this juncture, it’s likely none of our campuses will fully re-open in fall,” said UC spokesman Stett Holbrook in an email to CBS2. “We will be exploring a mixed approach with some material delivered in classroom and lab settings while other classes will continue to be online.”

Even aside from sports, a hybrid model will allow universities to appeal to both students who want to be on campus and those who don’t feel comfortable doing so and want to stay at home. Fewer students on campus also makes it easier to social distance. Plus, it’s a format that certainly allows for athletes to be on campus.

It may also be that the schools, in anticipation of the medical likelihood of another significant viral wave come fall, felt it best for all involved (faculty, staff, students) to avoid having the “send everyone home in a chaotic rush” situation again.

"The University of Akron will announce Thursday [5/14/20] what its president calls fairly substantial cuts to the school’s athletics program." Miller says that will mean the elimination of some sports. But he says they are committed to remaining a Division I school. “You don’t lose costs when you move to other divisions. You still have to pay for coaches, still have to pay for facilities, you still have to travel students. We believe that the best course of action is to work with our Division I partners in Ohio and the region to develop a better Division I model.” Miller also says there’s a $4 million exit fee to leave the Mid American Conference. He says constructive conversations are going on among MAC schools to develop what he calls a more rational mid-major DI program. www.wksu.org/post/university-akron-cut-athletics-teams#stream/0
