Welcome to the AVP Rules. You register with your partner: you get your spot. Partner is “injured” and you get an injury replacement. Sounds a bit fishy to me too. The registration deadline isn’t even for another week or so for a series that’s still a month away. Did Day/Flint register and then claim injury the next day as if it were unexpected? Again, assuming the rumors are true. It isn’t fair for Lauren to lose her points due to her own pregnancy, but it seems like Em has enough points that she could have picked up several of the Q defenders and still made the main draw and likely would be more competitive as well. Kelly Reeves or Zana Muno wouldn’t jump at the chance to play with EmDay and an automatic main draw berth? I dont necessarily see why its unfair that a player loses points when they get pregnant, particularly when its planned. Its the same as taking time off to do a PHD or play indoors for a year or many other things. Also this idea that there is some value in Lauren as an Olympian? Thats extremely doubtful. Some hypothetical fan not sufficiently enticed by April Ross - a two time Olympic medalist potentially facing off against the reigning world champs (including Olympian Pavs), but the thinking "well if you add one half of the weakest team in US Olympic history to the mix who is also the FIVB record holder for 25th place finishes...."

I’m in television marketing. This is a television event. You don’t see the value in promoting a former Olympian to 390 million Americans clueless to volley but watched the Olympics? 😂😂

I'm more of a mathematical realist. There's about 330 million Americans. I'm not sure how many Amazon Prime memberships there are, but there are about 130 million U.S. television households. You want to market to 390 million something or others.

And every one of those other Olympians has won multiple matches and all but one have been in medal contention. But sure, the incredible value of being able to say Olympian when combined with Lauren's non-existent name recognition beyond volleyball circles and her Ghana-esque Olympic record has tons of value. Also its not a television event, its primarily a streaming event, and the small part that will be on television, unless NBC is televising a whole lot more than they usually do, wont feature Lauren anyway.

This isnt an injury replacement in the sense of a player who had registered and who got hurt a few days before the event, or who had earned their points any time recently. Its the first event of the year, and letting EmDay basically pick whoever she wanted, rather than having to play the points game like every other player out there seems wrong to me. Also, and I may be wrong here, this is a free entry for all these events and thus the entire year, which makes giving Lauren Betsi's points even dumber. also if the pregnancy rumor is true that isnt an injury OK, thanks. I was genuinely interested in your reaction (I hadn't understood your statement about the points earlier).

I dont blame Lauren/Em for this at all and I continue to admire how Lauren makes so much out of so little by paying attention and using the system, but for the AVP if they are going to give some players a big leg up, Id rather it be promising young talent who could eventually be top international players rather than solid players who have topped out their potential. Of course my first preference would be for a fair process

If this is actually the case, I'm going to boo Lauren, Em and Betsy any time I see them at a tournament. Even if it's walking through the tournament and not playing. low class.
To me this is cheating, it may not be illegal, but it's cheating. They are doing something under a false pretext.

Lauren is getting her pregnancy points from her last 4 tournaments and that is why her and Emily are in.

Lauren is getting her pregnancy points from her last 4 tournaments and that is why her and Emily are in. She only played in 3 AVPs in 2018. Are they seriously going back to 2017? That would be bs too. It was her choice to only play in 3.

1 a team 2 Sara Mel 3 Kelly sara 4 Brandi Sara 5 Kelly Emily 6 cook jace Day keeps her points with Betsi and Lauren is an injury replacement. Here is the rule for injury replacement for the cup: Partner Changes Once admitted into the series, teams will not be allowed to change partners unless in the instance of an injury. The healthy athlete will be allowed to choose a partner of their choice from outside of the already-competing athletes within the series or if on the Reserve List. If the injury happens more than 12 hours prior to the commencement of the series, the new teams points will be recalculated and the field will be reseeded to create a new entry list for the series.

Why? Because I’m talking about television marketing? When you line up the sponsors and you pitch the concept to AP or NBC you say, “I have X # of Olympians you can market their names”. Then I’ll be impolite back. You’ve never sold anything? Lol Whether she never shows up an actually minute on tv it’s what you pitch Their event, their gig: they can wildcard anyone anywhere anyway.

It may be TV marketing but someone must be extremely gullible to think that having Lauren in the main draw is going to drive ratings up, especially when her chances of advancing to an NBC-televised match are near zero.

She has been known to use her lawyers skills to help interpret rules to her advantage.

I do agree it would have been nice to see Em pick a defender from the qualifier, however doing so would cause a team to split up and potentially impact the partnership post AVP.
I feel like Hughes playing with Brandie over Fendrick shows Hughes doesn't think that partnership with Fendrick will last/go very far.
So, if Fendrick and Hughes aren't together anymore, then Fendrick playing with Em wouldn't break up a team long term with Betsi not playing.

On the other hand, it's not like pro doubles partnerships are known to be stable, long-lasting arrangements. In the end, the sacrifice might be done to save things that probably won't last anyway.
