I remember SPVB was promoting one of the Haggertys at 10-3 or 10-4 and then she got to Nebraska and "didn't play high enough to hit in the Big Ten." What you touch and the height you are effective at are two very different things. The SPVB and Nebraska statements can both be true. That'd be a pretty big differential.

For what it's worth, the top of the antenna in the men's game is 3.23 m tall (2.43 m net height + 80 cm of the antenna). If that were the case, and even if we were to give him a couple more cm based on not having a clear shot (a shot from the side or at the net would be better than a shot from behind the baseline), and because it's not clear if he's still rising, he'd be a little bit higher here in this shot. Still pretty ridiculous for a block jump, but nowhere near 12'. While these jumpers have wild maximum touches or beat their PBs in training and using the vertec, it is rare for a player to hit their absolute maximum jump in a game. Even though some of the players I've talked about touch over 12' feet, it's likely they are hitting at lower heights in the context of a volleyball match. Jeff Menzel is 6'5". His sternum is at the top of the tape in this picture. What is the length between a 6'5" person's sternum to the tip of their fingertips with their arms fully extended?Do the math. His arms are no where near fully extended in this shot. I don't know what that length would be because it is not a static value for all people. If you know Jeff Menzel's measurements and could supply them, I'd happily do the math. Look, I'm just telling you what I know, what the rules say, and using what measurements I do have. You can take that, or choose not to agree, and that's fine. I will reiterate that a shot like this is not the clearest, and seeing this same shot from the side or at the net would be better. Perspective matters and can distort how high we think these players can get. In any case, this is a thread about highschool vball, and I'm not going to continue derailing it further.

back to topic... what states have postponed HS season? and how many of those have postponed till spring 2021?
IL postponed till spring (2.15.21-5.1.21) and as of now, no allowances (that I am aware of) have been made by IHSA to allow participation in club and HS at same time. Clubs are holding tryouts 1st week of September.

I thought I heard someone from the USANT talk about most balls get contacted 12-16" above the net, that it's not common for women to hit higher than that even if they have the capability. Tom Pingel? Jim Stone? It wasn't Joe Trinsey. I don't remember who and I have no way to back it up. I don't think it detracts from the statement. Just because you can touch a height doesn't mean you can do anything with it. Just because Ryan Leaf could throw a football 90yds in the air didn't mean he could control it enough to be a good NFL quarterback.

Someone could touch 10-3 but not productively hit the ball at 8-4 or higher? I think it's probably much more likely the jump touch number was heavily inflated.

The topic you are referring to is not the height the ball is contacted at by the attacker, it's the height of the ball as it crosses the plane of the net. Attackers always have to hit on a downward trajectory in order for the ball to land inside the court boundaries. If the height the ball crosses the net were the same as the height you contact the ball at the moment of the spike, you'd be hitting wall balls all night and/or pegging everyone sitting 10-15 rows up on the endlines. And in-rhythm and accurate set is usually placed 3-4 feet off the net by the setter. Any tighter and you're drawing the hitter into the block, any farther off and the angles and trajectory of the attacked ball become less effective.

It's also why we call people who hit everything straight down all the time "warm-up kings/queens". The best hitters contact everything high and hit flat and deep into the court to maximize their attack height and the height of the ball as it crosses the net. Makes it much harder for opponents to get terminal blocks when you hit like that.

MN VB and FB were moved to a March-May season. No guidance on changing the HS-Club overlap rule yet.

Like that would happen. A better real world life example would hold more water. LMFAO A better thought would be someone from Kendall or Grundy playing in DuPage OR Kendall or Kane playing in Cook but the reverse makes very little sense given the caliber of clubs in Cook and Will, to travel to Grundy is nonsensical. EDIT: And I get what you're saying but at the same time it won't happen that way. Someone from Cook would likely end up at Will or DuPage before Grundy…it is far more likely anyway, there's plenty of good vball in Cook so no need to travel if you can avoid it. Life is tough enough without adding your kid commute time to the mix of your own commute times. I think you're getting too hung up on that example and your own location. There are actually players from Wisconsin and Iowa and Indiana that travel across state lines to go play at a better club than their local options. I heard of one kid that traveled from Michigan to play in Chicagoland. It might not be common, but it definitely happens. Doesn't matter what I got hung up on. The example sucked and I stand by it. The point *was* solid and I'll agree to that.

MN VB and FB were moved to a March-May season. No guidance on changing the HS-Club overlap rule yet. The Clubs want to start a fall league so girls can get some touches in but the High School governing board has said that any girl who plays in this FALL league will be ineligible for SPRING High School volleyball. One girl was told by her hs coach that if she plays in the fall, she will not be allowed to be a captain for NEXT year’s season. I feel like the high school board here in Minnesota is grossly underestimating how many girls play club and the value that’s seen in playing club.

They should look at California as CIF made an exception to their rule allowing girls to play both. Its not their fault and they should not be forced to make a choice between the 2 if they can do both. scorebooklive.com/california/cif-will-allow-athletes-to-play-on-both-high-school-and-club-teams-during-2020-2021-school-year/

That is a horrible ultimatum to put on kids, from the board and from that coach in particular. I hope they realize their mistake before the kids start making the choice that makes them see. I don’t think Illinois has said anything about club sports yet and lots of people are asking.
