Schools can plan, and coaches can start practicing. But I don’t see how Corona doesn’t sweep through schools once they open up. There is no way to keep kids at a safe distance on busses, in hall ways, and in classrooms. And then once they get to practices and games, the masks come off, and everything spreads. And then you bring in another school for games, and players and parents mix, and now you have kids in 2 schools infected. We closed schools in March to contain the virus. But nothing has changed in the months since that would stop the spread. Couldn’t have said it any better. All it takes is one case to start a school-wide outbreak. Until there’s a vaccine, we’ll have no way to ensure that all of the athletes and their families will be safe. Remember when we were hopeful that it would be over by mid-May/June?

Talked a guy last night that is an asst. football coach. He doesn’t think football will happen. Not enough time to condition. Maybe volleyball can continue.

Nebraska high schools moving forward. Conditioning and weights. Next week, open gyms can start. So far low numbers in Lincoln.

California is waiting for CIF (athletic governing body) to meet in late July and make a decision. Outdoor conditioning workouts (with safety protocols) have started but nothing else. On a call with the CIF Commissioner yesterday, the next decision date is July 20th. That is the planned announcement date for fall sports. They are meeting weekly up to that point in preparation. There are a variety of paths they are considering: starting on time with additional precautions, pushing back the season start into the fall and shortening the season, or having all sports move to the spring with staggered start dates. On July 20th, no matter what the decisions is, he is planning for it to be "All or Nothing"- that either all sports go or none do. So, even the low risk sports, like golf, would follow the same decision that affects the higher-risk sports, like football and volleyball. From there, it will be up to each individual school/district to decide on their own plans for participation. Same deal in NY, and I assume in most states. a) Students must be in classrooms. b) It’s all or nothing. It won’t just be football or soccer, if one sport gets cancelled, all sports will be cancelled/postponed. Also a very real, if not likely possibility of just having a regular season and no playoffs due to financial restrictions and concerns over cross-state travel, plus the possibility of teams needing to quarantine for 2-3 weeks at a time. Let’s get these kids as many games as possible, anything more than a regular season is just a bonus.

There is a FB group of 11k plus for being sports back to California and opening up schools at 100% in class. Interesting to read how one football coach suspended conditioning following protocols while another 20-30 miles away is openly ignoring the same protocols and running practice in 11 person pods (huddle, plays, ball).
This just makes me think that we aren’t going to see compliance by adults in authority postitions even if CIF recommends moving forward with some guidelines/restrictions.

They just have to put some weight behind it. From what I can tell, enforcement of various restrictions in a lot of states is a slap on the wrist first. In PA tons of bars were open without guidelines in place and nothing changed, then tons of people have gotten sick over the past couple days and they finally shut bars down by blanket policy, not just for violators. For stuff that requires government (liquor licenses, school funding, etc) they should condition that on following restrictions with low tolerance for breaking the rules.

Who is projected as the top team in each state? If I had to pick some state champions, I got a bad feeling that Corona will win at least a couple...

Barring serious underlying health conditions, school age children are at virtually no risk. Some teachers, on the other hand, are in at-risk categories. 60% of parents polled are in favor of a traditional school year and that is across the spectrum of districts (at least in CA). K-12 School Districts are planning to offer three models; Remote Learning (100% online), Hybrid (Core online with Electives in class), and Traditional. At this point it is very likely to come to fruition. SCVA had posted the Club tryout dates for next year (Oct and Nov depending on age), but I am hearing info that they might be moved back to late July. SCVA has removed the tryout info from their website which might indicate a change is coming. Indications seem to point to a High School sports season for Fall sports. Of course, everything is in flux and it could change again =)

Here in IL, IHSA is looking to switch the fall and spring sports seasons to have football fans in the stands to provide income to schools and the association. Girls and boys volleyball would swap seasons. Does this kill off the girls only clubs as the girls would end their seasons in March rather than June/July?

Girls and boys volleyball would swap seasons. Does this kill off the girls only clubs as the girls would end their seasons in March rather than June/July? End club ball early after having to cut it short this year already just to play high school ball? Who would do that? What’s the sense in that? Maybe I’m not understanding the post?
