It is unusual for an NGB National Championship to interchangeably utilize Junior Olympic with their national championships, when it is clearly only one sport at this event. There may be some misunderstanding in the part of the country you are from. I am based in the Southern Pacific District (which includes Los Angeles/Orange to San Luis Obispo counties and the Inland Empire) where Junior Olympics (Games) are referred to as the multi-sport event. The West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games which was in Southern California (moved to Las Vegas this year because of the virus) also has beach volleyball, most recently in Santa Monica last year (in Los Angeles County) and is one of two of the largest beach volleyball events in the country.
Why the NGB chooses to approve and interchange such terminology, even at the local level, is beyond me ... it may be a leadership issue.

When I was a kid it was a coed event and only volleyball and much smaller and was officially called Junior Olympics, at least that is what everyone called it and what was printed on the teeshirts. I think some older coaches/parents that played still have memories of that and call it by the older name.

While the above response is probably true, the previous poster claims the NGB or local entity (region) interchangeably utilizes both terminologies officially. In meetings that I have been in, certain NGBs still utilize Junior Olympic terminology, but with severe restrictions, otherwise it is accepted as a part of the AAU Junior Olympic Games or West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games, as per USOC policy. Why a region would promote or interchangeably utilize this is confusing or at best, a misunderstanding, when at the national level, the name of the event has changed.

Who said anything about a region using it “officially”? We’re in SCVA, and parents and players call the BJNC “JOs” regularly - that’s all I was saying, which explains why you didn’t understand the event I referenced in my original comment.
Don’t worry, no legal action is necessary, lol...

Here's a tip: it didn't go well.

This change was made to allow more junior players to play with their grade. About 3% of boys and maybe 1-2% of girls were a little old in their grade for the existing age definitions. Let sophomores play 16s if they turn 17 on 8/30 after their sophomore year.
