I have daughter who wants to play beach volleyball in college, and I have been talking to a few parents of the 2022 class. This class could start talking to coaches on June 15, 2020. Generally, the few parents that I talked to said that Camps and videos made a difference, for the coaches to get to know your daughter - if she is good and doing well at tournaments, she is already being tracked by the college coaches in their databases. Any other advice?

Pro Beach Player, Traci Callahan wrote a book you can buy on Amazon called: Get Recruited Beach Volleyball. She’s also the former coach at Florida State. There are limited scholarships opportunities so this book is helpful. Camps, Beach Volleyball Clubs are priority. Here in LA former Olympians Eric F, Holly McPeak, Barb Fontana along with Callahan, Larsen and Cook all coach at Elite Beach. They have all the connections to university coaches your child would need. |

I've noticed two routes you can take towards getting on the top programs. You can just play as much as you can, wherever you can. Savanah Standandage, Kelly Belardi, Gracey Campbell, Mabyn Thomas did this before they committed. They were basically beach volleyball road warriors. Another way, one I'm unfamiliar with, cause you don't see it that often, is to get with a coach that can train you in adult game and you wind up skipping most juniors tournaments. Maple/Kraft, Boyd/Walker, Kristen Nuss at LSU did it more this way.
I know recruits at the top programs that sent little video, if any at all. But they were right in front of the coaches in the final matches of the JO's, AAU Championships, Cal Cup, etc. And at their clinics, so the video was redundant.

I am new to the Volleytalk scene...always very interesting. Another source for recruiting for beach is Allie Wheeler. Travis from Volleyball Mag wrote an article about her. She played at USC and coached with Todd Rodgers at Cal Poly. I believe it is @awrecruits on insta.

Wheeler is amazing player & excellent human being. If my kid needed someone to help her with recruiting Allie would be my first choice.

Your club could also help as an advocate for your player, most clubs have relationships with college coaches. I don’t see a lot of benefit to a service necessarily but video being sent to coaches cannot hurt. I’d include a list of your upcoming tournaments, grad year, HS GPA, and relevant height information. It can be tempting to include finishes but a lot of coaches don’t find value in that information. Keep in mind depending on school, level, grad year, and other factors the coach might not be able to respond to your email. That doesn’t mean they didn’t read it

Not to put a sour note on this, but make sure your daughter isn't banking on getting into college through beach volleyball. In particular, in light of the pandemic and if there is no college football this season, athletic departments are going to be bleeding money more than usual. That will likely spark a discussion of sports that can be dropped at the college level to reduce the athletic budget deficit. If you don't think that's a possibility for beach volleyball, ask the men's volleyball team at Stanford if volleyball isn't on the chopping block.

Total in nation might be fewer so neither is the meal ticket womens indoor is VB but I think womens beach might be the easier place to get money. It’s the opposite. Women's indoor volleyball is a head-count sport which means that each athlete receives a full ride scholarship. Beach Volleyball on the other hand is an equivalency sport meaning that the number of scholarships offered can be divided between a larger number of athletes. |
