I'll never leave Hentzville.

I love Hentz, but I'd need to see her passing numbers against international-level servers with the international ball before. However, I believe it was joetrinsey that said passing stats are one of the few where practice performance is highly correlated to match performance. Joe, correct me if that wasn't you. So the good news is that Karch should be able to figure out if she can handle that before picking rosters for next year's events.

I love Hentz and think she has a lot of potential, but I don’t think 2021 is in the cards for her. Even if she has a good pro season, she has very little time to prove herself especially passing wise. It’s much more realistic to hope that she continues to improve (and have the drive to play libero) for 2024. I would be happily surprised if Karch gives her significant playing time within the next year

I think Hentz is the one, some players have to work hard for it, some are just talented and can elevate and play at any level.

If Hentz can't pass with the intl ball and intl level serving... she won't be on the team. Her other skills don't/won't matter to Karch.

Everyone knows that Karch cares far more about serve receive than defense. But Hentz also suffers from an unfair reputation among coaches in the US gym. Karch and others blame her movement when she doesn't make the dig, because it's so unorthodox. What they don't acknowledge is that it's her movement that allows her to cover so much floor and make the great digs in the first place. It's her reading that needs to be more consistent, but they complain about her movement because it's an easy target when she makes such big moves.
Edit: To be clear, they have issues with her movement because they don't teach it. It's a confirmation bias plain and simple.

After watching a good amount of national team play (Italy, China, Serbia) today, I’ve noticed that athletes like Egonu and Zhu Ting, can hit very sharp angles. Hentz can dig sharp angle. That, coupled with her insane tip coverage, makes her a necessity in the USA gym. Even though I am new to pro/national team play, it seems that Hentz will greatly up the USA’s play. Yes, her passing needs work, but that will come with practice. But her insane court vision and defense is something so incredibly special.

I am saying that confirmation bias is going to make it harder for Hentz to win the jersey than VT seems to think. What most here consider clearly superior to the other options (her defense) is a bone of contention for Karch and others. Not to mention, regardless of how good her defense is (statistically or otherwise) it'll be her passing stats that determine whether she even gets an opportunity.

I see JWO at Libero next summer, because with everything surrounding coronavirus, I don’t know if Hentz will be able to get onto the scene for this olympics. Hopefully for Paris!
