I don't think there is any particular odds on favorite at Tokyo to win gold. All the top teams have a shot at the podium. It would be fool-hardy for me to predict with any degree of confidence which team stands on top.

In Pokemon competitive battling speak (hahahaha) SPI = Spikes, BLO = Blocks, SER = Serves, DEF = Floor defense (digs and receives) Each skill rated from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) BRA: Ubers [Gabi, Natalia, Tandara] SPI **** BLO *** SER **** DEF ***** CHN: Ubers [Zhu, Zhang, Gong] SPI ***** BLO **** SER ***** DEF *** USA: Ubers [Larson, Bartsch-Hackley, Drews] SPI **** BLO * SER **** DEF **** ITA: OverUsed (OU) [Bosetti, Sylla, Egonu] SPI **** BLO ***** SER ** DEF ** SRB: OverUsed (OU) [Mihajlovic, Busa, Boskovic] SPI ***** BLO *** SER * DEF *** RUS: UnderUsed (UU) [Kosheleva, Voronkova, Goncharova] SPI **** BLO *** SER *** DEF * TUR: UnderUsed (UU) [Ismailoglu, Baladin, Boz] SPI *** BLO *** SER *** DEF *** JPN: RarelyUsed (RU) [Ishii, Koga, Nagaoka] SPI ** BLO * SER ** DEF **** KOR: RarelyUsed (RU) [Lee JY, Kim YK, Kim HJ] SPI ** BLO * SER **** DEF *** DOM: RarelyUsed (RU) [De La Cruz, Rivera, B.Martinez] SPI *** BLO ** SER *** DEF ** ARG: NeverUsed (NU) [Rodriguez, Nizetich, Fresco] SPI * BLO * SER *** DEF ** KEN: NeverUsed (NU) [Moim, Murambi, Chepchumba] SPI * BLO * SER * DEF * I think Kenya could go in the NFE category because NU is a little too much for them to handle.

I'm afraid our Toddy j is going to be absolutely heartbroken if the USA doesn't medal in Tokyo. Love the passion Toddy brings to the game but after reviewing the China vs USA WC match I still believe it's going to be China, Serbia, and Italy with the top three medals. Our NCAA love and low-level NT season tournaments seem to sometimes cloud our vision as to the true talent that we possess this cycle. It's the Olympics darlin'....anything can happen. I definitely think the USA has a chance but I follow many teams other than my own country. It's way more fun that way. My goal, if I have one, is to get more people as excited about the pro/international circuit as they are about the NCAA.

That you do..."darlin' ". I’m afraid to ask.....what is the meaning/purpose of your comment? Just having a little keyboard-fun in this desultory and depressing time for volleyball. And if that confuses you even more; I was in HS debate (even won a trophy): There is a term for the phrase of yours I replied to, "My goal, if I have one...". 'Tis known as a contranym. My partner and I used to eviscerate our opponents by our bringing up their usage of contradicting, non sequitur phrases during tournaments. Even more confused? Iow, in this case you definitely do 'have a goal'..I'm bored!

I also like that word contranym. I love to debate but I don't think I am that great at it. It's hard to keep my cool sometimes.

I went ahead and locked the poll. I think I'll keep the results visible henceforth.

I have to question each of you who voted for Serbia. Buša is a huge liability and does little to contribute to the offense of the team. Her passing is shaky at best and so is her defense.
I argue that Brazil (if healthy) is the best trio followed by USA then probably Italy or China. Ya'll gotta consider all three hitters not just two. Taking into account passing ability, defensive ability, serving, blocking and terminating.
I could even argue that Russia has a better trio overall than Serbia.
Two hitters do not a trio make folks.

Didn’t see this poll but I would have voted for Serbia. Mihajlovic and Boskovic are just world class. They’re an absolute unit even if Busa is whack.
USA is 2nd, followed by China then Italy. I don’t see Brazil’s pins as Top 3. They don’t even know who to start at OPP. Gabi gets shut down by the block often, even in Turkey.

USA is still in flux so it's hard to argue a certain combo just yet. Still I would argue that any combo of pins the USA can put up from the top 4 OH's paired with either Drews or Thompson is probably top 3. China barely uses their opposite but having to pass in certain rotations makes Gong a better all around player than most opposites on the other teams. So I think China is probably top 3. I don't doubt Serbia and their ability to win. I merely don't see how anyone can vote for this trio when Buša is easily one of the weakest OH's out of the entire field of OH's that will be at the OG. Every single other OH2 listed other than maybe Murambi from Kenya can at least pass and has contributed on offense more than her. Therefor I don't see how Serbia has the best trio, which is what the poll is asking. Mihajlović and Bosković may have the offensive output of a trio but they are not in fact a trio.

I mean, there's no definition that "trio" means all 3 players have to meet a certain threshold, is there? If you asked who the best team is, and I say Serbia, is that also the incorrect answer because Busa is so weak? Posters (like myself) weighed that Busa is a weak OH, and still decided that Mihajlović and Bosković are enough to keep Serbia in the top 3. If you don't think that Mihajlović and Bosković are strong enough to counterbalance Busa, that's fine, but I feel like arguing that they aren't a "trio" just because one is much weaker, is a strange interpretation.

It’s 2/3 are World Class. Who else can claim to have two world class pins right now? Plus the 2 pins that are good are also LETHAL out of the back row so that makes up for the lack of offense that Busa provides.

China, Brazil, Italy, Serbia and US are all good. Hard to say which is the best trio among them...
If pressed, I'll go for China's Zhu Ting, Zhang Changning, Gong Xiangyu and Brazil's Natália Pereira, Gabi Guimarães, Tandara Caixeta.
