Sponcil hits .000 and they win in 2. Hughes/Brandie could not solve Claes over in 2 so kept serving Claes. Again, not sure why teams don't mix it up every now and then and serve Sponcil and drop the blocker early to try to combat the over in 2. At least give different looks. Brandie's bump setting placement was bad. Hughes struggles to side out on strong side but Brandie's setting wasn't helping much. Just based off of this match today, Claes/Hughes getting back together would be the best pairing of the 4 that were on the court. I love how scrappy Sponcil is but she just cannot sideout. I think the Claes/Hughes ship has sailed. I think that ship burned up and is at the bottom of the sea.

What’s the status of Summer Ross’ health nowadays? Wouldn’t imagine that Sara would choose Brandie over Summer if given the choice for multiple reasons.

Hughes/Klineman seems the best choice, but I have no idea what the dynamics are there. I also am not convinced that April is done after Tokyo. She could go another quad (or now only three years extra).

She could go another quad (or now only three years extra). Hughes/Alix will have some of the same issues that Hughes/Brandie have, notably Sara's lousy offensive range. Brandie is basically the first weak setter Sara has played with. Alix plays left so not nearly as bad, but that range is a problem Sara needs to solve. Bet Sara is appreciating Summer's incredible hands right about now

Curious who you think is the most ideal partner for Hughes given her strengths and her needs? Hard to say. Claes and Summer are the obvious choices. Alix is much better than both but a lot of her strength is in the sideout game and no one is going to serve her anyway. I think Id rather have Sara/Summer as a sideout team each getting 15 serves than Sara/Alix with Sara hitting 30 bump sets. Alix's blocking has gotten better but she is still closer to Claes than she is to someone like Pavan. I think she and Summer would be much more consistent, Summer does everything well except move, which Claes also is not good at, but Kelly can be a little more physical. Summer/Hughes are a 3rd every time type of team to some extent, whereas Claes/Hughes would be a 1st, 3rd and 9th type of team. I think the real solution is that Alix should start working on her hands. Bump setting is fine if you play with April Ross but both Sponcil and Hughes - and maybe Stockman - who are her options if April retires, need a much better set. Would you take Sara/Alix?

She’s come a long way in 9 months putting in work every day as a defender. It was a great measure of where she is and where she has to go. She was on the phone with Evie as soon as the match ended discussing exactly what you stated here. Right back to training with the men on the men’s net Tuesday working on those things. The guys have been awesome pushing her - she’s learned a lot from them It’s great to hear that they’re getting right back at it next week. I imagine with no more events likely for at least three months (especially if travel to Europe remains restricted), it will be difficult for the players to maintain their motivation and some may be tempted to take some time off. AVP is trying to put another tourney together in Oct. - we will see if they pull it off. They are looking for sponsors. There’s a 2 star in cypress coming up; we don’t know if points will be given. They will announce that later. Also, Ed R is running Friday tourneys in HB in sept for the champions cup teams if they want to play. At this point, the goal is just to get better and better.

I love the thought process here. It’s pretty bleak when it comes to blockers out there who are well rounded. Alix is so intriguing because she has only been on the beach for three years. The skill of hand setting is something that can take a lot of time to develop, and sometimes is just as much mental as anything else. If I am her or her coaches, I use this extra year before Tokyo to work on that as much as possible. Then after Tokyo, it’s much of the same. All that to say, yes, I would take Sara/Alix. I think they have the best potential out of anyone out there, because there really isn’t much that needs to be worked out other than the setting, albeit, that is a huge part of the game that needs to be figured out. Although, if Plummer decides to jump to the beach, that may change my thought.

Plummets high competitive beach days are over for the time being.
Sara just cannot play left. Shell be good for any player who allows her to play right. Sara should just pull am April and refuse to play anything but right amd shell be ok.

Canada closes the gap down to 3 now. 15-18 Pavan and Mel a little bit off today. Hope they can straighten it out.
