The Florida loss is just as painful as the Washington one. Though I think the 2013 and 2011 teams obviously had a way better chance of winning it all.
That beyond sketchy replay call where they overruled the no-touch call... and even worse, an absolutely unjustified double contact call when USC was rolling in the 5th with a lead after the switch.

The last match of the previous pool which unexpectedly goes to three, then ends in a way that forces a tiebreaker all while you're waiting to start your afternoon pool on that court. Lol. And during the tiebreaker, you notice someone from the scorekeepers table signal to the R2. Then the R1 comes over. Suddenly, they are waiting for the head ref...and you know that you are never going home. ...and then the power goes out...

1983 Men’s NCAA BB final. I was all in for Jimmy V and NC State. My older brother was all in for Houston’s Phi Slamma Jamma. As I celebrated NC State’s last second victory, my brother sucker-punched me from behind.
Oops, I seem to recall the OP said “emotionally” painful. So, the emotional scars of my brother’s betrayal notwithstanding, I’d have to say either Minnesota’s NFC Championship loss in 1988 OR USD’s loss to Hawaii in this past year’s tournament.

...my brother sucker-punched me from behind. I laughed. Then felt bad for laughing. Thank you for your sacrifice.

So tell me, which volleyball match(es) were the most painful to watch emotionally? Ones that still sting after the match was over. Personally, the 1997 championship match between Stanford and Penn State was particular painful for me to watch for some reason: Loved that 1997 Stanford victory over PSU; the fourth set, missing out on match point @14-13, still gives me heartburn . One of 2 SU classes to win 3 out of 4; Since there seems to be numerous Stanford haters here; a list of my most painful: These oughta make any SU despiser jump-for-joy at their remembrance of them... 2006: NEB versus Stanford; 2007: Penn State vs. SU; 2017 (semis): Florida versus SU. Stanford played great. No disputing that. I was rooting for Penn State, so that was why it hurts for me.

God Logan played her ass off in that final. The disrespect..... She did. I remember that match. I may not like Stanford the team, but I always appreciate their players.

One thing I realize, more-and-more, is that this was the era (mid-1990s) when athletic players showed up!

And how about watching Zhu Ting demolish US in the World Cup. Painful to watch, but at the same time, you have to admire how incredible an athlete Zhu Ting is, she is simply amazing:

One of my absolutely favorite matches of all time....as a kid I had this taped on VHS and probably watched it 20 times. This was the first big time post season battle between Stanford/Penn State too I believe. Even the blowout games I found to be entertaining. Game 4 was truly one of the most exciting games I've ever seen though. Holds up well 20+ years later. Both teams played at such a high level and Zemaitis just straight up willed her team to take that game. 12 kills that game, dug a Folkl swing on match point and stuffed Walsh on another. 25 digs for a middle blocker in a championship game. Legendary performance that isn't spoken about enough. Penn State, Long Beach, and Stanford were a cut above the rest that year and each took home a distinguishing honor--Misty with POY, Zemaitis with MOP, and Stanford with the title. Penn State obviously got their revenge (and then some) in 99, 07, 08, 13, and 14 while Stanford clawed back to cement its dominance beating Penn State en route to their 2 most recent titles.

The one I painfully and clearly remember is 05 Neb/UW. 2005 was the first year that I had actually attended a game and followed the team (was in 8th grade I think).
Honorable mentions: 08 PSU/Neb, this one hurts just because we were SO CLOSE. 2010 Purdue/Texas (this was the game that I started to really appreciate defense lol) 2013 Texas/Neb 2016 Texas/Neb 2018 Stan/Neb (again, so damn close!)

Heartbreaker, but a hell of a match. The entire match was back and forth pretty much at every moment. It was the DR's 7th 5-set match of 10 total matches in the tournament. 39 points from De La Cruz was not enough.
DR was in above their heads (Rivera played out of her mind offensively), but man, were they inches away from eliminating China. A win would have put them in the Semifinals against host Italy (who they already beat in the tournament).

One of many for DR I have to say.

One of many for DR I have to say. Idk, luckily there are many, many more 5-set wins to watch and remember than 5-set heartbreakers! The most recent heartbreaker was the 2-3 loss to Brazil to qualify for the Olympics, but it was a blessing in disguise I think. Niverka Marte realized she wanted to be a "Queen of the Caribbean" when she saw DR beat Cuba and Brazil and win the 2003 Pan Am Games on home soil (that was a big deal at the time). I imagine winning the 2020 Olympic Bid in front of a packed house at home inspired many young women to get involved in the sport!

Yes, I'm not saying there are more 5 set losses than wins for DR but I am saying many of their 5 set losses are indeed disappointing, in a lot of those cases, DR squandered opportunities.
