Someone (a stat person) has to judge whether a dig was easy or difficult. Did the defense send back a free ball after that dig? One person thinks it's a free ball, someone else thinks it's a good shot. Stat person rates it as a good dig, another rates it as a lucky dig.

i don’t think you’re getting it. it’s not about how “difficult” the dig is, it’s about how good of a dig it is. it would be very similar to how passing is judged indoors

It's about rating it AT ALL, that's my point. Unless 1 person is going to stat/judge every single point, it won't be a fair playing field. 1 person's 3 pass is another one's 2 pass. It's the fact that there's subjectivity involved. The only real subjective stat we have in our game is the double (which isn't really even a stat, it's technically a ball handling error) and people are always on here talking about getting rid of the double call and just letting people do whatever they want with the ball. Partly because it's so subjective from person to person. Why would we want to add even more subjectivity?

Partly because it's so subjective from person to person. Why would we want to add even more subjectivity? apples and oranges. getting rid of the double will make some rallies last longer and removes confusion for the typical fan and will make the game more physical most believe. This a rule change for officials during a match and will impact some game results. Creating more detail (subjective or not) for stats will not affect game results (unless they are used to pick starting line ups). Even if there is big variation in stat keepers it should still show differences for players that help their team win more than others. Teams with high level metric tracking are already doing this and they do their best to normalize stat recorder's subjectivity. Other things that stats are used for are post season awards and that is subjective by definition.
