Yeah, I think people fail to think about the alternative when people say 'sports are non-essential and are a potential source of spread so we should cancel them.'
You know the best way to take tens of thousands of college students and prevent them from frequenting bars and frat parties? Make them in-season college athletes. Heck, that might be true for high school as well.

Why is anyone assuming the players will get sent home? Most schools at that level will have students on campus this fall. Why would football players get sent home?

As a former college football player, I can confirm that bars and frat parties will indeed be flooded in the absence of training camp/season. I can’t speak for other sports. Note: I’m exaggerating, of course, but not by much. |

It's worth noting that there might not be a single college athlete in any sport that has more to gain by this fall getting cancelled than Trevor Lawrence. He'd be the #1 draft pick in the spring and the season getting cancelled means there's zero chance of any sort of catastrophic injury that could put that at risk. If the season is cancelled tomorrow, he could have a multi-million dollar contract with Nike by the end of the week.
And he is STILL the biggest voice saying he wants to play.
It isn't about the money.
