They will not be playing in the cold. It is usually not too unbearably cold in the north in November and even into December. I would try to play 1 or 2 games for each team on campus before switching over to the domes in Detroit, Indy, Minneapolis, etc. I do not understand Thanksgiving, other than it being a convenient holiday to aim for. I would have aimed for first weekend of November. The spit test that Abbott Labs announced recently appears to alleviate a large part of the concern about spreading the virus as it is cheap, fast and easy. The rollout of that test is supposed to have massive capacity sometime in October. First week of November should be as doable as Thanksgiving. If anything is ultimately doable. Also, this comes back to the question of why did the B1G make the decision when they did, rather than continuing to delay until you could no longer delay. Thanksgiving is when students leave campus. I think that matters. Dont they still only leave for 4 days?

I don't know about every Big Ten school specifically, but a lot of (maybe most?) universities don't have students returning from Thanksgiving break. Some moved up the academic calendar so finals are before Thanksgiving. Others are going online only for the week or two after Thanksgiving. They don't want students to fly home then fly back and mingle again. That travel increases the risk of spread.

It's my understanding that these discussions involve only the football coaches and AD's. The presidents and chancellors have had no discussions about this matter, at least none that have been publicly acknowledged.
Some people are speculating that the presidents/chancellors are behind this because they didn't expect the blowback from the players, fans and players' families.

If you made a decision you thought was the best one at that time , you should stick with it. Nothing really changed since then. Still no vaccine, cases are still high in some areas and that heart condition associated with the Covid !9 is still there. Many of the BIG 10 states are still experiencing high cases and deaths count. A few parents, players and fans go crying and you fold. This will just embolden people in the future. Make enough noise and higher ups will cave.

I believe it also involves the medical side as well. But, true, not the actual decision makers.

They might have also gotten around to looking at their budget pro-formas and realized the real impact of the cancellation of football. Some games were played this weekend without death and pestilence breaking out, so maybe BIG leadership got a whiff of the fact that the rest of the Power 5 will be moving forward without them.

The Pac 12 isn't playing, either.

If the PAC is the only group following you it’s time to realize you aren’t really a leader.

Some games were played this weekend without death and pestilence breaking out, This isn't a serious comment.

That process improving now allows for more testing without the high cost to athletics budgets. Not sure about your high death count - and you cant look at states, you need to look at the city, town, or county the school is located in. Because Wisconsin is located in Wisconsin we should look at the whole state numbers or should we look at Dane County numbers or Madison numbers specifically.

Because Wisconsin is located in Wisconsin we should look at the whole state numbers or should we look at Dane County numbers or Madison numbers specifically. Wisconsin cases are going down, due to less testing, but the positivity rate is hovering around a too high 8%. Dane County (Madison)cases are steady or slightly rising in the last few days after a slight drop prior to that, with the positive rate around 2%. There was a spike in June and early July 3 weeks after bars reopened to 50% capacity (also, protests started), with a large number of those cases among people in their 20s. Cases and percentage positive have stabilized but never returned to where they were before that. Also, with Dane County doing a lot of testing and having 10% of the state's population, there are places in the state clearly not doing well. The city of Milwaukee, a hot spot through most of this, is actually experiencing a clear downward trend in cases this month, with its percentage positive lower than the state's for the first time.
