Why would anyone leave UNI to go to Chicago State? And he only started at UNI January 21? Typo? They did some serious word acrobatics to make his 'collegiate club' or 'beer league' career seem legit.

That one is actually even worse.. Doesn't mention 'club' anywhere. Kudos to Chicago St I guess.

The top level of NCVF D1 Men's is nowhere near your "Beer League" comparison. Here's Team USA Libero Erik Shoji dissecting one of the D1 Men's Championship Games.

True, but it doesn't change the deceit. When you mention "Illinois" like this, it suggests varsity rather than club competition. Someone who is only a casual follower of the sport won't realize this given Ohio State's men's team has had success recently, so readers will simply think 'Big Ten athlete' when that's not it at all. As written, it's intentional deceit. That isn't the guy's fault but I wouldn't want that as a big part of my bio. Does the SID know and intentionally wrote it that way, or do they just not understand either. I remember in the late 90's early 2000's when every other coach hired was "the head coach of the USA Junior Olympic team," often which had competed in our national championship (what?!?) instead of the truth which was that they had been the head coach of a 14u junior olympic team from Chattanooga or Sheboygan. I don't think the SID's ever tried to mislead in their articles, it's just that they didn't know enough about volleyball to know what they were talking about.

Every time I took a new coaching job (and I've had several), the SID sent a draft of the release for me to review, even when I was a pup assistant straight out of college.

Usually the coach themselves provides the details and then it gets wordsmithed by someone else. Not uncommon for a young up and coming coach to try and pad where they can, if that happens to be the case. That being said, I also think the poster calling this beer league is way off. Illinois has historically had very good teams and play at a very high level.

I don't want to take this thread onto a crazy tangent about men's collegiate club volleyball so I apologize if anyone was offended by that label. I meant it more literally than figuratively, there is excessive drinking that goes on at all of those tournaments. I'm sure he is a great player, but using 'Big 10 Setter of the Year' sounds a lot more like B1G than it does BTMVA division of MIVA. Not technically wrong, but still verbal gymnastics. Regardless, best of luck to him! Would be cool to see Chicago St turn it around.
