I had no idea that they are so well paid. Do other leagues pay more? Pay less?

I had no idea that they are so well paid. Do other leagues pay more? Pay less? Top womens players will earn more in Turkey, China, and maybe Russia. Italy doesn't have the top salaries. Larson was earning 7 figures in both Turkey and China (reportedly). Vakifbank and Eczacibasi in Turkey have the most spending power as of recent. KYK was earning over 1.2m at Fenerbahce and made more than that in China.

KYK is earning a base of $290,000 in Korea this season. She was offered $400,000 by her club (salary and $170,000 in add ons) but she signed for a lower salary to give more money to teammates (The Korean league has a salary cap of $1.7m ish) and to prepare for the Olympics with her Korean teammates. When KYK signed for JT back in 2009, she had a base of $300,000. Trần Thị Thanh Thúy (Vietnamese player at Denso) was earning $182,600 in 2019. Drews is definitely making more than that with JT.

Merete Lutz is making $210,000 in Korea this season. As a renewed player for her club her salary when up. Base pay for foreign players is $120,000 for the 2020 season. There's also performance bonuses that are decided by each team.
Safe to say, for foreigners, Italy isn't at the top of the table.

@avid Can you explain how add ons work? Like extra for every game won, or is by each individual players success (kills, blocks). Or is it by how far the team advances? And can they cut salary if you are really bad? Like it you have 5 service errors in one game, is there some kind of fine? I think in American sports, Football teams can fine players for bad performances. Thanks!

American football players can be fined for disciplinary reasons or for certain egregious penalties committed on the field, but never for poor performance. Their contracts and their player union offer them substantial protection against any such action. Same for all American pro sports.

I know you can get fined for throwing the ball into the peoples as a celebration. Thanks for letting me know how it work.

They can get bonuses for winning the title, reaching the final, etc. whatever is determined by the team or the team's sponsor. There aren't any "cuts" for negative performances. No athlete or agent would sign that contract lol. Im not sure about volleyball (too many foreigner rules probably), but in other sports there are higher payments for starting a game vs starting on the bench, incentivizing good performance.

Typically when I've read about contracts that have incentives for the number of starts, they fall within two types of situations. One is the player is coming back from a severe injury or has been "injury-prone" and the second is a "back-up" contract. In those situations, the player signs a low base contract relative to their past performance or contracts, but high $$ incentives for starts.

They also get add-on bonuses for beating certain teams and winning various matches in league play (as deemed important by the organization).
