How do translations of books and plays deal with puns?
For example, I'm reading Fredrik Backman's latest and the translator has a real estate agency in it named "House Tricks." How is it possible that the Swedish would have the same pun?
This happens all the time. Do they have to come up with their own pun?

How is it possible no one can recognize Clark Kent is Superman just because he puts on a pair of glasses?
And why does he wear his red underpants on the outside?
(I'm not even bringing up the whole "blow a hole clear through Lois Lane if they ever do the deed" thing.)

Why are there always exact doubles of characters in movies and books, but this has never happened in the real world (other than twins)?
And what's with these masks people can put on in movies and become the exact look-a-like of some other character? At least in Harry Potter they treat stuff like this as magic.

This includes puns and idioms and poetry. Translations of songs, for instance, are rarely word-for-word or even exactly concept-for-concept. (Also, I'm not getting a pun out of "House Tricks".) |

How are songs that have rhymes translated to another language? I mean, I know they translate the words-they just don’t rhyme?

It was probably really funny in Swedish. "How's tricks?" is something I never say. Nor does anyone I know say it. I guess that's why it didn't register as a pun to me. |
