With the increasing vertical of the men’s game, why isn’t a set further from the pins/antennae more common? I get that there are some advantages, like increasing the length of court by hitting that deep angle and tooling a block is easier near an antenna, but here are some arguments for inside sets:
-easier to chip around the block. If you pull an outside set in a few feet, it opens up that wedge of court between the blocker and the sideline. SUPER hard to defend, especially when defender is angle.
-margin of error. If you bring that outside set in a few feet, the antenna is no longer an obstacle for the hitter. There are sets that go too far outside and become a forced cut shot to the waiting defender. That same set, pulled inside a few feet, would remain much more attackable by the hitter, leaving way more options than the forced cutty.
-do current players really need that huge cross-court swing available? The athletic guys I see can hit the line with plenty of pace to get a kill. If the set were pulled in JUST A FEW FEET, wouldn’t they open up both sidelines for hitting.
This is all assuming there are no trap sets against the Russian or Norwegian giants. It seems like the defender would have no clue what to do if sets weren’t mostly pushed to the outside. Also, I understand that the antenna serves as a reference point for both setter and hitter, so it simplifies their offense to default to just push it outside more often. It seems like this is a minor detail that is outweighed by positives. Also, the influence of an OH in indoor coming in at that angle has probably influenced our sport, but it’s appkes and oranges since in indoor the goal is to separate the three blockers and spread out the offfense; a moot point with one blocker.
SO WHY DO SO MANY TEAMS DEFAULT TO SETTING SO FAR OUTSIDE?

Loved having the Crosscourt guy on. Are there any other bvb inventions/adaptations/contraptions that should’ve been successful, but weren’t?

Why isn’t every blocker trying to mimic the technique of Anders Mol? The amount of terminal blocks he gets is insanely high compared to everyone else, right? If I recall correctly, Phil in his prime got around 6 terminal blocks per match, but Mol is around TWICE as many. After watching Mol/Sorum not make calls like other teams (including America’s finest: Line/Angle/Jump into line/jump into angle) and instead simply call “ball”, why are more teams not copying this strategy? Is Mol’s physicality that much more superior that it allows him to execute on another level, or is it a strategic decision for American teams to stick with traditional defensive blocking? OR is the talent really hidden in our fast friend Sorum, who forces ALL attackers to hit aggressively instead of attempt shots, thus allowing Mol to rack up the high amount of terminal blocks. If Sorum weren’t so good, other teams would shoot more, taking the opportunities for Mol to stuff them into oblivion. Where did you come up with that number of terminal blocks (12)? I watched three random matches to check because that seemed unrealistic. On the Vikings channel I watched them beat Italy 27-25, 21-19 and he had 4 I watched them beat Reid/Theo and he had 8 and was dominant I watched them beat Evandro/Bruno and he had 8 and was dominant. (That one actually wasnt random I had seen it before and wanted to watch it because I remembered how amazing his blocking was in this one) Thats three matches, two in which he was dominant, and he never came near 12. Where are these matches where he has 12 terminal blocks? And to average 12 that means for every 4 block match he has to have one where he blocks 20?

After reflecting, do you think your actions at the Florida KOB event were selfish, particularly being in and around the other players after being disqualified for a positive covid test? Regardless of political views on the subject, its a very conceivable outcome that actions like this could be viewed as a general disregard for player safety and could lead to less/cancelling of future events, essentially compromising many players’ ability to earn a living. If you could go back, would you observe quarantine protocol for the greater good of our sport during covid times even though you personally believe that your rights as an American don’t require it? We can’t let it slide that this says “IN and around other players”. Hahahaha I meant to say “in and around the players tent.” That’s a hilarious gaffe. I was gonna start responding to your other questions about set location and mol/sorum but then realized what thread this was.

Who is the better player, peak Phil or current Anders? Also would be fun if you did the comparison based on skills
Setting
Blocking
Serving
Attacking
Passing/serve receive
Defending (had to throw this in because I love Phil's knuckle pokie defense)

travismewhirter do you have a partner update for the 2021 season (assuming the avp finds a way to return relatively to normal or at least an expanded version of the champions cup)?
