Has anyone heard what the USAV has planned for HP this year? Usually the tryout dates and information starts coming out about now. I hope the program doesn't lose 2 years of training.

They are changing up the program - I've heard no details beyond that.

HP is a fiscal liability for USAV... there are probably several regions that do well with it but not many (fiscally). For it to succeed someone will have to take the fiscal liability and put in the work... and I’m not sure USAV will do that.

I always assumed it was a revenue generator for USAV.

2021 is a lot of horsepower. I think the new Lamborghini only has 830.

It may be for the individual regions, but not for USAV. They charged $75-$100 per kid just to try out. Hundred of kids attended many of the tryouts. They used mostly volunteer coaches with only one or two paid people at each site. HP, as you knew it, won’t happen in 2021. Not sure if the changes are just for this year, or permanent.

I do not know if HP is a cash cow, based on per diem cost to send one of the very few players who actually make one of the teams for 10-14 days all inclusive training, but that aside; do you know something regarding HP, or are you speculating? Thank you =)

Just got an email that they are replacing HP with USA Volleyball National Team Development Program (NTDP), there will be no tryouts, players will be invited through scouting at qualifiers, bid events and high school/club tournaments across the United States. They will have quarterly training sessions.

Erin Virtue - NTDP Senior Manager
This is the correct choice.

Interesting, makes sense given our current situation. I wonder how they will learn of players that they will target for evaluation. Will they focus on players that are already in the pipeline?

I assume they would put out feelers to College coaches regarding potential athletes for the program. Don't know if this will be better but I hated the old system. Random volunteer evaluators scoring girls. Depending on who evaluates you, you could end up with different scores. Know of girls at obviously different talent levels where the more talented got placed on a lower HP team because her eval. was a different week than the other girl.

And just like that USAV took the $$ being made by the regions and put it straight into their pockets... Seems to me something will have to fill that void... The % of athletes that actually ever have a shot at the national team is far to small... And the skill set far to narrow to leave that void that 99.9% of the volleyball community would want to fill... Will def be curious to see who steps in to do that. To be clear ... I don't think that this is a poor choice. I think it will probably aid the selection and recognition of future Olympians. I do however think that the HP product previously offered covered far more than that. Interesting days ahead.

One downside is what about the clubs that don't do qualifiers. And there are lots of well respected clubs that don't do qualifiers.
