Just got an email that they are replacing HP with USA Volleyball National Team Development Program (NTDP), there will be no tryouts, players will be invited through scouting at qualifiers, bid events and high school/club tournaments across the United States. They will have quarterly training sessions. In general I like the change as the prior evaluation system was inconsistent.
One downside is what about the clubs that don't do qualifiers. And there are lots of well respected clubs that don't do qualifiers.
I could see USAV leaning heavily on college recruited athletes to fill these spots... Not far from what likely happens to create thr current teams being filled w college players (not sure what they label them as at the moment)...

Coaches talk, coaches know and at the end of the day its not for PERSONAL gain (IE their own collegiate programs) but the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I hope that means more for coaches!

While I certainly agree with you... I do think that there is some clout found by college programs who have a SA or PSA placed on one of these teams. The issue becomes does one or more of those coaches begin to have enough influence over the process to hurt another... should they!? That’s def a very different question than “will they”?

I really like this because a casting call isn't real volleyball, they should be watched where it matters...battling on a court as a member of a team. Casting calls are going to skew you towards tangibles like height, jump, reach. Those are super important and should be part of the assessment, but does the kid make their team better? Does the kid know how to win? Intangibles show in the heat of it...

I suppose I like it because it doesn't give so many players the ability to "brag" about trying out for "Team USA," but I disagree that battling on a court as a member of a team is a better evaluation of potential. If you're the best player on a team playing in the patriot division (or classic division), you're just not going to be evaluated equally against the 5th best player on a team in Open. Height and Jump are equalizers.

Unfortunately, the past system missed out on a lot of potential. What they saw were the kids who could afford to be there, or who had the clubs get them there and get exposure. In certain parts of the United States, that is fine, but inner cities are under represented, as are the smaller suburbs and niches where volleyball isn't well represented. Finding people who are willing to look past current ability and see potential in the hinterlands would be key. & not just physical potential but to see the character of people who could be (great) with solid training & exposure. & people who can recognize this are few and far between.

But where I think the issue comes into play is if you have two equal kids who are impressive in hitting lines and you need to distinguish between the two, watching one play in patriot and one in open will not help. Now, seeing them at two different USA tryouts might be the equivalent, but I do think it's a good first step.

I think HP was supposed to be about the Olympic pipeline? I would think physical potential is 95% of that. Character is great on top of physical potential, but does not hold much weight on it's own.

Too bad it is going away. Picking the NT team will always take care of itself. The HP program was a good way to give players who were serious, and wanted to get better, exposure to a higher level of competition and some better coaching. Hopefully something will develop to take it's place.

Has anyone heard what the USAV has planned for HP this year? Usually the tryout dates and information starts coming out about now. I hope the program doesn't lose 2 years of training. 2021 HP Championships are in Phoenix Convention Center, July 21-25
