Agree with most everything everyone has said here. Conditioning Conditioning Conditioning; someone said cardio. Forget that...it has absolutely no business in our game. I've been coaching over 20 years, I may gave had 1 or 2 freshmen that had decent upper body strength. I know we all want to focus on lower body, but do NOT forget the upper body. I'm going to assume by your comment that you do not know the definition of cardio. Conditioning is cardio. Without cardio there is no way an athlete will have the endurance to last a whole match. You need to train some form of cardio in order to be in volleyball shape. You will not last a whole match just "strength" training. In volleyball do they just stand in one spot without any movement? Constant transitioning from offense to defense in a rally, blockers constant jumping/multiple blocks and lateral movements in a rally, laterally moving across the net, multiple attacks in a rally, etc. are all forms of cardio. You are not going to have the endurance to last a whole match without training some sort of cardio. The definition of cardio is any type of exercise that gets your heart rate up and keeps it up for a prolonged period of time. Cardio absolutely has business being in our game because without it you will not last.

The winner of a 5th set many times comes down to fitness. Most losing coaches will say they ran out of gas in the final set and most winning coaches will credit the hours of conditioning, wind sprints, bleacher work and time on the track. When I played we didn’t touch a ball the first week....I quickly learned in year 2 I better show up ready for any endurance training.

Blaming "fitness" is like saying "they just wanted it more" - coach speak for they won, we lost, we need to play better.

I do these exercises from these types of videos a lot. Tabatas, HIITs, and also kettlebells and medicine balls. With COVID 19 stay at home orders, many are on this excercise plan ...

My apologies, I don't know what I was thinking. Volleyball points often last 15-20 minutes

My apologies, I don't know what I was thinking. Volleyball points often last 15-20 minutes As we all know, volleyball matches also are a series of discrete points that take place a long period of time, with plenty of time to recharge, and not all back-to-back.

But if the talent level is "equal", I want to be rooting for the more fit team. A lack of fitness, being magnified by the stress of a 5th set, will show up in a fine motor skill like serve receive.
