Mid-30s? Still absolutely insane that it's that high. Tells me that he probably has the support of ~ 40-45% of the Republican party - which makes him still the most powerful person in the party. This is very sad and disappointing.

This is very sad and disappointing. Maybe, just maybe, if GOP leaders came out and admitted the election fraud BS is a lie it might help instead of trying to blame Democrats for wanting to hold Trump accountable by imposing impeachment. The majority of House Republicans, AFTER the siege, voted with Trump to overturn the electoral votes.

They want to make sure he can’t run again.

Or because his actions (and non actions) are a disgrace to this country - him not being allowed to hold office again would be a nice byproduct...

Polls suck. Too many people focus on them. Too few people anwer them that represent a variety of backgrounds. What Trump did was wrong. He has ignored the Constitution. It doesn't matter what percentage of people like him or still support him. It actually does matter what percentage of people like or support him. It speaks volumes of who we are as a country. Polls don't show that. Polls are still conducted by landline phones. How many people under 60 still have those? Citing polls distracts from what Trump did. The polls do not matter. Sedition does. Governing by poll numbers, thinking by poll numbers has caused a lot of problems and helped perpetrate silliness such as complaints about the 2016 and 2020 elections. Instead focus on finding out what actually happened and deciding from that.

I do agree that polls can certainly be inaccurate but they should not be ignored. We are seeing the polls trending in the right direction in response to Trump's incitement of last week's insurrection.

and, as a brief follow up, I do believe Trump's popularity does speak volumes as to who we are as a country. Look at our own little VT troll, hoolie/df. There is NO amount of facts or evidence that will deter him from his comfort in ignorance. Watch, as he continues to proudly display his ignorance on all that is reality. Then remember, there are millions in this country like him. That should make us all very sad.

Watch, as he continues to proudly display his ignorance on all that is reality. Then remember, there are millions in this country like him. That should make us all very sad. It makes me sad. And it is a huge management problem. America has never been comfortable in recognizing the reality that a significant minority of the country's citizens are ignorant racists. From the era of de-segregation and civil rights but before the explosion of social media, their voices were subdued and controlled by social norms that rejected their values as inconsistent with a modern democracy governed by the rule of law. But now, they can spread their hate, lies and conspiracy theories thanks to all these social media. They can inhabit an alternative fantasy world free of facts. Worse, there is a vicious feedback loop where free from the need to face facts, they nurse and reinforce their grudges based on imaginary fantasies through these online platforms, potentially triggering acts of violence and other extremism.
