USC had a senior day celebration this season where they explicitly said five players would not be returning. Haley Hallgren, Joy Dennis, Maja Kaiser, Paige Dreeuws, and Josannah Vazquez. Some of these women could still have eligibility so it’s possible they may be grad transfers. We commented at the time that Tina Graudina, Sammy Slater, Hailey Harward, Julia Scoles, and Bo Chulo were not included in the ceremony. There had been indications in 2020 that Tina would only come back for the 2021 season, so we aren’t sure if maybe there’s been a change there or not. Ultimately, we’ll just have to see how it plays out. Same with the transfer rumors of Villapando and Schafer to SC. On a similar note, UCLA had a Senior Day Celebration with Simo, Muret, Quade, Sanchez, and Phair, even though some/most of those women still have eligibility. The programs also have to manage each year the limited number of scholarships, both full and partial. Thanks for summarizing, hadn't been playing that close attention. There will be many more transfers announced in the future, they aren’t all public yet and it’s not my place to announce them here, but I know starters for major schools like UCLA, Stanford, etc. that are either widely rumored or verified transferring. TCU is getting the biggest influx that I know of. FSU is getting some too, but so is USC. It’s way too early to know just how it will shake out, but significant changes on the way.

Championship Run - Delaynie Maple and Joy Dennis, ft. Laurel Weaver Haha, funny to watch them just bolt from the court like that. It sounded like some segment of the Trojan Marching Band was there to celebrate the championship.

The real MVP's of the Championship match were Haley Hallgren and Hailey Harward. I have been their harshest critic and penciled them in for a sure loss against the bruins, based on their performances. I expected our 3 wins to come from the 1, 4 and 5 pairs. I was hoping at best that the 2's would step up and steal a win to take pressure off the wins coming from the 1, 4 and 5 pairs. But Hallgen and Harward stepped up, especially Harward, and saved their best game or the season for last as they out hustled and out executed a very good bruin pair. Talk about a clutch performance. That is how you win championships. Someone unexpected has to step up and perform at their highest level. That is what Hallgren and Harward did for the Trojans. It was an outstanding performance, and definitely needed, as the 5 pair lost and the 4 pair were in a third set. Also credit needs to go to Scoles and Slater as they made it impossible for a bruin victory even if our 4 and 5 pair had fallen to the Bruins.

The moment the ball left Sammy Slater’s left hand, the USC senior thought something was off. Her serve on championship point floated to the back corner of the court, drifting to her left as she watched it sail. “Out, out, out,” a UCLA player called. The ball dropped in. The Trojans were national champions. “To win on an ace was just such a sweet feeling [against] our crosstown rival,” Slater said. www.latimes.com/sports/story/2021-05-09/usc-defeats-ucla-ncaa-beach-volleyball-championship“There’s no question that I think our squad from one through five is the toughest squad that I’ve seen at the collegiate level,” USC head coach Dain Blanton said. “But it doesn’t matter if you don’t go out and prove it every day.”

Best pair in the country and went undefeated in Gulf Shores. Best pair at the tournament. But not all tournament.

Kloth appeared un-servable, sonofdogman. Just flat out hit the ball at a higher point than any blocker, I was impressed.

Nuss/Kloth dropped a set to FSU 13-21 before squeaking past 15-13 in the third set while USC defeated FSU's ones 21-13, 21-15. Graudina/Kraft defeated UCLA 21-16, 21-17 while Nuss/Kloth eked out two 23-21 wins vs. Denaburg/Simo.

Kraft and Gradina also went undefeated and scored a point for USC everytime I believe. Still think Nuss and Kloth should get pair of the year if they haven't already.

Still think Nuss and Kloth should get pair of the year if they haven't already. Pretty sure all-tournament is selected based on pretty straight-forward criteria in terms of W-L at each position with some tiebreakers in place like sets lost and then points etc. Graudina-Kraft didn't drop a single set, and went 4-0, and no other pair at that position produced nearly as clean a record over the weekend. I do agree that "all-tournament" the way it is selected is sort of silly. Consider if Graudina-Kraft won every match (4-0) but needed three sets each time. But another pair went 5-0 in dominant straight sets at the same position (never face USC). That pair would be chosen at the No. 1 position to observe the guidelines for selection. How strange would it be though that a 4-0 pair on the national championship winning team would not end up on the all-tournament team? Could have happened! But it didn't... but could have. NCAA probably should reconsider how that happens.
