First time poster here. I think this promises to be an interesting year for the lady Cougs and Coach Olmstead. Last year, IMO, was one of her best ever coaching jobs, but feel that many posters are over estimating the contributions collectively of our two new transfers--and, as a result, will require some more great coaching and juggling. I believe the moment Koerber steps on the court this August, she will be the 6 rotation pin due to much better passing and overall mobility from the back row than we would get from TBN. However, I also believe Grimmer was the most effective pin on the team by the end of Spring over Livingston (who far exceeded my expectations) and TBN, who perhaps due to injuries, has rarely lived up, at least in my mind, to what I thought she would do for us. It would have made things simpler for Olmstead if Koerber was an OH than an Oppo and she effectively replaced or augmented TBN while allowing Grimmer to continue to grow and develop. As it is, and assuming that this board is right that Olmstead stays with a 5-1, Bower then effectively replaces one of the Outsides--I think--while Grimmer comes in when Koerber is in the back row. If I am right, this really sets up a dog fight for swings from the left side, and could be a part of the reason for the Morgan Johnson and Leilani Dodson transfers. If I am wrong (Grimmer redshirts?), then I think these transfers don't help as much as some think. This really would be a great year for Olmstead to consider a 6-2 and let her weapons loose, IMO. That said, the possibility of redshirting Meyer and having an elite setter for the next 5 years has to feel good to her too. Koerber is a significant upgrade over Grimmer in every way. Grimmer hit .167 against Wisconsin and .118 against UCLA, Koerber hit .429 and .368 against that UCLA team. Koerber is a better blocker than Grimmer. Koerber has a tougher serve - she led the Pac in aces per set and opponents had a 42% good pass rate vs her serve. Grimmer's serve gave up a 71% good pass rate - that is a free ball. Koerber is a better passer and floor defender than Grimmer, Dayton or Wee. Not having to play Dayton and Wee (assuming Gretchen Reinert is healthy) will upgrade BYU's ball control and make Allen better too. Replacing Grimmer with Koerber upgrades every phase of the game for BYU.

Agree with most of this. That is why I--and everyone really--has Koerber immediately stepping in as the 6 pin hitter, too. And I agree that Reinert could help Allen as well. But that wasn't my point. My point was that, IMO, Grimmer is still the best returning and incoming pin option not named Koerber. And my observation was simply that if a RS is always on the floor and Bower rotates with an OH, there will be a lot fewer swings for the OH position this year. Should be interesting to see who is getting most of those those swings by the end of the season.

I agree there were many times she was BYUs most dynamic hitter...but not sure I would say she is the best returning pin...but we will find out. Her improvement this year on offense was tremendous.

After watching Nataly Moravec play, I believe she could make an immediate impact on the pins come 2022. She hits over the block almost every time, has an incredible back row attack, and is a great passer/defensive player. She will have her work cut out for her with all the pins we will have over the next few years but she has the talent to make an immediate impact IMO. Does anyone know much about Sophia Callahan? Could she be in the mix in the next two years?

Also, it is very difficult to locate any video of Ellyse Stowell, our highly rated OH recruit. Has anyone been able to see her play/find video of her playing?

I have not. I have volleyball friends in SoCal that have and they told me she was a late bloomer similar to Erin Livingston and has a very high ceiling. High point of contact, good lateral movement, overall good athlete. Take it for what it is worth--pure second hand info. I will say this, I love getting big time recruits at an early age...but BYU also has had a long tradition of finding diamonds like RJP, Haddock twins, etc. that were not highly recruited. I have heard that Callahan could fit that mold. I have heard very little about Nataly Moravec -- but I hope she fits that mold as well. I really like BYU's present and future pin situation. Let the "competitive cauldron" begin.

Please don't take my prior post the wrong way. I am not dissing on our elite recruits--just as important if not more important to the overall health of a problem. On a personal level I am really pulling for Rob's daughter and feel like she too will be a great addition and be part of what should be an intense competition that will only make BYU better. Pluss, gotta pull for former teammates

Also, it is very difficult to locate any video of Ellyse Stowell, our highly rated OH recruit. Has anyone been able to see her play/find video of her playing? I have watched quite a bit of film on Elyse Stowell, and am really excited to have her in blue--although my expectations for her are possibly different from some who simply look at her ranking. She is an outstanding beach player, has soft hands, does almost everything well--will truly be an outstanding 6 rotation pin hitter IMO. However, particularly the past two years, I feel that other teams have "caught up" to her T Street team and while she is and will be an outstanding OH for us, she hasn't been as terminal in key situations as I would have expected for her. So, I don't expect her to supplant TBN in the beginning. Possibly by year end. That is part of what I find intriguing about this year. But by the time she leaves, if she has the work ethic, I think she could be one of the best to ever come through here, albeit with an impact on the game that isn't always reflected with gaudy kill numbers. My .02.

The competition culture of BYU has claimed another casualty: Grace Wee.

The competition culture of BYU has claimed another casualty: Grace Wee. Hmm. Well, they definitely have too many high caliber players on their roster to keep everyone happy. So, if you love the school and want to be part of the winning program, even from the bench, I guess you stay. Otherwise, you seek a smaller roster/less competitive program and find some court time. It's got to be a tough decision for many players.

I saw a picture of BYU's home conference schedule for the fall. I should have took a picture but I want to say their first home conference game is September 23.

The competition culture of BYU has claimed another casualty: Grace Wee. That’s one possible explanation but playing time isn’t the only reason people transfer. I don’t think we should assume that Wee didn’t think she’d be able to compete. Dodson got all the playing time she could’ve hoped for and she’s leaving.
