Barely tuning in but i thought Wee would win the libero jersey, weird that she and morgan both got beat out by the freshman Madi Allen was pretty highly regarded as a recruit, so I'm not really surprised that she has the job at the beginning of the season.

BYU wins 25-9, 25-22, 25-17 on a kill by Grimmer. BYU looked great in the first set, a bit sloppy in the second, and pretty good in the third. I will be interested to see the box score, since the live stats weren't available, but I think this was a pretty good performance for such a young team.

Dodson’s move to OH looks to be a smooth transition. Nixon has the hardest swing and looks good on the back row attack. Not a surprise that Allen earned the liber shirt—I’m guessing BYU will invest in her development in hopes she’s the next Mary Lake. Grimmer got a lot of sets on the right and handled most quite well. Portland had some bright spots. They may surprise some teams.

On the team's website, they have a nice PDF for the Portland series that has more information on the team in general. It has a nice breakdown of the team by class, position, and home state, how to pronounce some names, information on the coaches, etc. I'm impressed. This is a nice press kit. Edit: I think I'll actually add this to the OP.

I haven't seen anyone talk about the possibility of either Eschenberg or Ballard-Nixon coming back next fall? Does anyone know if they are both moving on for sure after spring? Maybe it's already been discussed and I missed it because I only rejoined the forum a few weeks ago. Sorry if that's the case.

I haven't heard anything either way or even really thought about it, but it's a good question. I believe Heather Gneiting will also be back in the fall (in retrospect, her decision to go on a mission at the time that she did really looks great in terms of timing, since there was no volleyball at all in 2020).

BYU is usually very good about keeping their women's volleyball roster up to date as well. That's why I figured it was probably true that Dodson had moved to outside. Now if it was the men's team, I would just assume they'd entered it incorrectly and hadn't gotten around to fixing it.

The box score for the first match with Portland is up. BYU outhit Portland .379 to .108. BYU hit a sizzling .500 in the first set and .429 in the third. They hit just .235 in the second set. Ballard-Nixon hit .393 on a line of 14-3-28, and she also had seven digs. Grimmer hit .348 on 10-2-23, while Eschenberg hit .667 on 6-0-9. Dodson had a great first match, hitting .318 on 9-2-22. Bower had four kills, 31 assists and 18 digs. Allen had 17 digs in her collegiate debut.

It's hard to know with them. Since both are married, that obviously plays into it. Kennedy redshirted, so she's been here for five years and may not want to play another one. However, since her husband is back for a 2nd Senior season with the men's team this spring, maybe they would consider sticking around for the fall too. I'd love to have Taylen back. She's finally coming into her own I think after the injury as a freshman. I do wonder though, since she did not redshirt the year after her injury, if she plans to be done in four years no matter what. I know her husband was a senior last year and completed his basketball eligibility, but no idea if he graduated. I did read an article before the football season last year that he was thinking of playing one season of football before looking to play basketball overseas.

As it happens, the Salt Lake Tribune published an article about the Eschenbergs today. It looks like this will be her last season.
