FIVB has announced that the 2021 VNL will take place in a bubble format, likely at one location, to avoid excessive travel and risk of infection: www.fivb.com/en/about/news/secure-bubble-concept-approved-for-vnl-2021?id=92108They didn't go into too much other details, but I am assuming they will take place in China(?). This may mean quarantine is required for the athletes prior to or after their arrival there. What other measures do you think is likely?

"FIVB will advance negotiations with interested organizers and aim to announce the host country or countries and the match schedule in February 2021."
I hope it doesn't happen in China. I'd much prefer if it were in Europe.

There's about as much chance of it happening in Antarctica as in Europe, lol.

Despite this being the only Olympic tune up for nearly 2 years, I think this means we don’t see A teams. I just can’t see players like Larson, Robinson, Akinradewo, etc having any desire to spend another 2 consecutive months out of the country in a bubble.

The only teams that will likely rest starters are the European Teams and probably China. Brazil and USA will be all in.

This format is tailor made for USAV to prepare for the Olympics. It’s like a 2 month training camp for both men’s & women’s teams paid for by the VNL organizers. If it wasn’t an Olympic year you would have a hard time getting “A” teamers to commit to this, but is USAV going to pay for a separate training camp in Anaheim to prep for the Olympics AND send 14-25 players and staff to VNL? Not likely.... So, if you want a chance to play in Tokyo get ready to bubble-up!

But a couple of months in the bubble, with weak competition and right before Olympics?! I think that may stretch even Karch's and Brazil's commitment to the competition. Outside of those 2 teams, I would be shocked if more than a dozen or so out of the best 200-300 players in the world participate. That in turn may influence Karch and Ze not to bring their own A teams (however much they may want).

You know what, for once, I don't have a dog in this fight. I don't care who shows up to the tournament. At this point, I am just grateful it is happening. If all teams don't send their A teams, then at least the competition will be more balanced and interesting. #silverlining

I’m just looking at the calendar and, if you’re preparing a team for the Olympics, you would want to go hard for the 7 weeks the VNL occupies. There are 3 weeks between the end of VNL and the Olympics start. Enough to taper your training and comply with whatever quarantine period Tokyo requires.
So, do you take advantage of the complimentary training venue and competition for those 7 weeks, or set up a training group in the US with no competition to play other than yourself, and foot the bill for a second set of players, coaches & staff?
