I disagree. The only teams that will likely rest starters are the European Teams and probably China. Brazil and USA will be all in. I think China will have their starters in the bubble but maybe not playing every match. Assuming ding xia can ever get out of quarantine.... 😂 I suppose it also depends on how many players teams will be allowed to bring into the bubble. I agree that we might see the best players there, but not necessarily playing every set/match depending on the competition. I think there are a lot of players itching to get on the court with their National Teams and start prepping for Olympics. Players nursing slight injuries might want more rest. Overall, from a player standpoint, I think you want to get out there, play and fine tune (but, maybe not play every match). As well, if there’s competition at your position (and usually there is), you want to be training with the team. Another consideration is the new ranking system and how much weight is placed on the VNL. What VNL teams are not in the Olympics but want to improve their standings?

Yeah I don't think any of the teams will want to *entirely* sit out of the vnl.
Belgium, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, and Thailand are not in the Olympics. That means the other 10 are in. Teams that are in Olympics but not VNL would be Argentina and the African team.

I DO think teams that aren't in the Olympics will send their A teams since it's the only major event of the year for them. Or maybe there are continental championships in the fall? I'm not really sure. The challenger teams - Belgium, Canada, Dominican Republic and Poland - will definitely want to stay in the league, so they'll try hardest.

Right. But is partial going to be an option? There are still some details that need to come out. If this is in a bubble, they aren't going to want too big of rosters. Can players enter/exit the bubble at different times. My initial assumption was that it would be treated like typical events where you get a 14-player roster to play the 15 matches over the course of like 4 weeks. But that might not be true.

But that might not be true. if CVL was anything to go by, then players can only exit the bubble. Maybe there'll be a bit of an expansion, like 18 or 20 players for the entire duration. Then there's more alternates.

Anyone want to guess who hosts? Actually could Japan be a realistic option? After all, its only a short break between the end of the VNL and the start of the Olympics. It will be a lot simpler if they just stay in the same country in that period.

It's worth noting that the linked article didn't say the dates would stay the same, just the format (round robin then finals). For example, there's no way they have a full off week between the round robin and finals like they traditionally would.

True, but I would imagine there won't be such a long gap between the VNL and the start of the Olympics given the fact both are summer tournaments. If the period between the two competition is indeed short, then it would make sense for the VNL to take place in Japan.

Another consideration will be the end of club season + championships. I doubt they wont allow players to come in in the middle of VNL in consideration for them.

I know gymnastics is not volleyball but one random tidbit: in 2008, the USA women’s gymnastics team plus alternates trained in Japan for a couple full weeks before heading to Beijing. And actually, the three alternates to the team continued to train in Japan after the team left for China, because the alternates are not accredited unless they end up replacing someone (which was allowed until the day prior to competition.) So, again I know it’s not the same sport, but I think it would make a lot of sense to have the team training for a few weeks in China before heading to Japan. You’ve adjusted to the time change, jet lag is gone, etc well ahead of true Tokyo ‘report time.’ (I would imagine many teams qualified to Tokyo would want to take advantage of this? Though I wouldn’t be surprised to see some teams not go all out for VNL, still.)
