So looking at next year, we lose Cooney & Bruder, that's it. OH - Ellie, Bruna, Sophie A, Jessica OPP - I would move Raina to OPP, then Whittington MB- Collins, Swanson, Hinton, Bingham, Bohm Lib/DS - Barnes, Sakoda, Gregus S - Brown, Mosher Does Kuper get to comeback? Not sure how that works. Maybe someone can help explain Why move your best player out of position?

Easy - after Cooney leaves we have a glaring hole at OPP with more than capable OH's to fill in if we move Raina. She has already shown she can hit in the OPP and out of the back row.

Then have one of the other outside hitters fill in on the right?

Brown mentioned earlier this season that she plans to get a masters degree before med school. She didn’t mention her plans to continue playing, but the fact that Tamas is bringing in a backup setter next year makes me wonder if she has already decided to move on. It’s very possible she hasn’t even decided yet. Maybe a controversial take here…but I’m hoping that Brown moves on and we can get a fresh look at the setting position. Our passing certainly hasn’t helped Brown throughout her tenure at Illinois, but I just don’t think I can handle another season with her at the helm. Give Mosher a good look after her RS season and see if a refresh helps spark this team against some of the top teams in the B1G There is a lot to like and respect Diana Brown as a STUDENT-Athlete. I would describe her as a Type-A personality which works to her credit in most all of her endeavors. However, I am not sure it is always to her or her team's advantage at the setter position. It looks to me often that she just needs to relax and take a deep breath.

If we’re comparing just for the sake of conversation, this kind of reminds me of Poulter’s freshman year. No secret that she was the better setter between her and Lex V. but personality wise, Lex is who we needed on the floor (which happened half way though the season). I have nothing but respect for DB’s in-class achievements and they’re something to be applauded, but it would be great to see what Mosher or May bring to the table. I’m not counting out a 5’9 May just yet. The season also isn’t over so i’ll keep the focus on the final weeks we have with this group of Seniors! I-L-L

It pains me that we are already talking about next year.
At one time Whittington was discussed as the opposite of the future. She has proven to be a very capable middle and appears to have beaten Hinton for the backup middle position. I would be surprised to see her moved from her role as backup middle. Terry looks good on the right side and moving her to opposite has the advantage of her hitting out of the back row whenever our setter is in the front row. She is the only one of our hitters who has shown any ability out of the back row. Holzman looked terrific at one of the left side positions before her injury. Assuming Holzman regains her form and takes one of the left side hitting spots that leaves Nunge and Bruna fighting for the other. If Terry stays on the left side that would leave Nunge, Bruna, Holzman competing for the other left side position as well as Stephenson, about whom I know very little. Here is to hoping we don't struggle with all the injuries next year.
I understand both sides of the discussion about Brown returning as setter. There is no one more popular than the second string quarterback. Brown's options have been extremely limited because of the passing. When she does get a pass in which she can set the middle as often as not she has to go elsewhere because the middle is so predictable in those rare situations. As the passing has improved this year our middle has improved. Brown has to get some of the credit for the improvement of both Collins and Swanson. On balance I hope Brown is back next year. Changing setters will not improve the passing.

Raina had been hitting out of the OPP for a few rotations this year. We have other OH’s who can fill the gap at OH without losing productivity. Raina is best equipped to make up for the loss of Cooney at OPP

Whittington did an outstanding job subbing in for Collins. Still have to wonder if Nebraska, Minnesota and/or Ohio State might have been different with Collins playing.

Gabriel was a top #10 setting recruit.. Apples and Oranges. hasn't she also lost her setting spot this year. No she wasn't. She was recruited as a walk-on DS. I’m not sure Gabriel was considered tops in Hawaii. But the coaches at the club scene knew that she was a feisty player.

Kuper walked through senior day but said she may come back. Brown did not participate, so I will assume she currently plans to return. Super seniors did not count toward scholarship limit this year, but will next year. Do we have enough scholarships to keep both Kuper and Brown on scholarship, assuming they would not return without a scholarship?
FWIW, Gabriel is currently setting a 5-1 for Texas.
How rude will it be to ignore gathered family Wednesday in order to watch the Michigan match on a computer screen, as casting to the family room tv will probably not be an option?

I don't know how redshirts work with respect to scholarships but I would think that Diana's got a scholarship for next season since it's her redshirt senior season. I could be wrong on that though. I'm with you on the Wednesday night family/volleyball dilemma and best of luck to you! I'm lucky in that extended family visiting isn't happening until Thursday and the nuclear family accepts that Illini volleyball streams are a priority.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! One of many things I am thankful for is the good-natured banter we’ve shared this season. Hope all is well for you!
