I’m not certain how many DSs will be used next year. It will depend in large part in how much Raina and Bruna improve their passing. Bruna passed more before arriving in Champaign because of substitution rules in Europe, so I’m not sure how much room for improvement is there. She was also effective hitting from back right. I suspect Raina did not pass much either in club or high school. Maybe someone familiar with her game knows? I really don’t see Cooney as a six rotation player if Raina and Bruna are effective in that role. A back row attack has to become a larger part of our offense. We gave up a lot of points when receiving with Brown in the front row and the middle stacked left. It would not surprise me if we only use a libero and only one other DS, using two hitters as six rotation players. After watching the tournament that is clearly the direction the women’s collegiate game is taking, at least amongst the top teams. Our middles also have to become more efficient. Hitting in the .200s might be good enough for a pin, but not for a middle.

I liked Bruna & Raina hitting out of the backrow the last few matches. Our middles should just be drilling the slide all summer. Hopefully Whittington and Bingham can run a slide. Still hoping we can pick up a transfer OH to add some depth on the pins.
Rollins & Pritchard both went to PSU.

Wes Hollenberg's latest piece in the Daily Illini touches on Taylor Kuper's path from high school outside hitter to starting libero in the B1G. Includes comments from Kuper, Megan Cooney, and Chris Tamas: Super Kuper: First-Team All-Big Ten selection reflects on new responsibilities, challenges
Great season from Taylor and looking forward to seeing what the back row looks like next season. Hey we've only got a few months until hopefully an orange and blue game!

I'm a huge Diana Brown fan, but I'm so excited to see the competition between her and Mosher in the fall. I think it will resemble what we thought the competition would be like between Allison and Brown, but will be much tighter. If Brown wins it out, I hope there is a role for Mosher on the court because she is pure athleticism that the team needs.

New Illinois wrestling head coach, Mike Poeta, is moving all home wrestling competitions from Huff Gym to the State Farm Center. fightingillini.com/news/2021/5/12/illini-wrestling-announces-move-to-state-farm-center.aspx Previously, Illini wrestling has shared Huff with the volleyball team and men's and women's gymnastic teams. The plan to build an ice hockey arena in downtown Champaign has been stalled and perhaps is in limbo. This facility not only was being built to house a new intercollegiate men's hockey team, but was also proposed to act as the home of Illini wrestling, men's and women's gymnastics, and women's volleyball.

Athletic Director, Josh Whitman, who is a former Illini football player and was hired as AD in 2016 has been very successful in getting large donations to enhance athletic facilities on campus. I do not know all of the factors that were involved in AD Whitman making a commitment to build an off campus hockey arena. I suspect money was a large part of the conversation.
Although, the University of Iowa has recently built an off campus ice arena that also is the home of Iowa women's volleyball matches, other B1G schools (Indiana and Ohio State) have built separate facilities for their volleyball teams. My personal choice would be to go the route of Indiana and Ohio State. Now, if only I had the financial wherewithal to donate the seed money for a stand alone Olympic sports facility on campus!

Do we know if Jimmy John is a volleyball fan? Surely he's got the money to throw at a new arena. Sub sandwiches could be served at the concession stand. Jimmy John's Gym has a certain ring to it. I second your preference for a new standalone volleyball facility and I'd love for them to squeeze it onto campus somewhere. The current Google Maps satellite view looks like there could be room just east of the new Siebel Center for Design, basically kitty-corner from Huff to the southeast. Or they could just get rid of a portion of the grassy parking area between Oak and First, Stadium and Kirby and plunk it down there. Or the undeveloped parcel immediately to the north of Bielfeldt, at the SE corner of Kirby and Fourth.
