She started vs. Belgium (3-0W), Bulgaria (3-0W), Dominican Republic (3-2L), Korea (3-1W) and Brazil (3-1L) in the VNL. Honestly, I think her best one was the opener vs. Belgium. Bulgaria and Korea were not playing their best players so those match ups heavily favored the USA. Carlini took over in week 4. I think she is the probably starter though, I think Poulter getting another 2 ish years of professional ball under her belt will be very nice to watch this summer. The team really does have a ton of depth right now at each position except for Libero. Poulter vs Carlini...who is the better setter? Who should be starting at Tokyo? i feel like Poulter fits in the USA system a bit more than Carlini does but Carlini is better overall and has the intangibles 🤷🏻♂️

Carlini had never played in an event bigger than VNL, so it's not like Karch knows she's good so he's getting Poulter experience. CARLINI needed the experience too. It doesn't make sense to be to start Poulter for those matches if she wasn't #1 at the depth chart at the time. Um...never played in an event bigger than the VNL? She has played in the World Cup in 2019 when the US won sliver.

At the time, I remember people trying to justify why Carlini wasn't starting the big matches. It was all nonsense. She needed the experience as much as Poutler because it was her first major. So she must not have been #1 on the depth chart at that time.

Do they translate into win/loss probabilities? The favorite is the negative number and is the amount you need to bet to win $100. The underdog is positive and is the amount you'd win off a $100 bet. So if you bet on Netherlands, you need to bet $417 to win $100. If you bet $100 on Belgium, and they win, you win $290.

Thailand seems a little extreme too.

And the vig is pretty big on these lines since the bookies probably aren't super confident without any international volleyball being played for 18 months. DR +1000 seems about right. But I agree, I certainly wouldn't bet USA -2500.

I don't who was their 'A' team, I just know some members are out with positive cases and some vets came back who were retired. I imagine some of their vets are still better than newcomers, but who knows what's happened in 18 months anyways. It's more of me thinking Japan just shouldn't be THAT heavy of a favorite vs. how good Thailand is. But yeah, that makes sense re: vig. I imagine there will be some pretty drastic changes even after the first matches alone are played.

However I don’t agree with your logic of Poulter being #1 on the depth chart in 2019. Who started in the Olympic qualifier versus Bulgaria? It was Carlini. IMO that tips Karchs hand on who are his starters since the stakes are so high.
