So that is 5 that don’t dress and 4 that don’t travel. I assume you don’t need 5 travelling setters, probably 2 maybe 3 and you don’t need 5 DS/L so maybe 3 - Does anyone know if Peck is playing this fall or taking a Red Shirt Year? I think her surgery was in January or February and average recovery is 8-9 months, but I understand her recovery has been going well? So many questions ….

Team morale seems better already. Lot of depth seems to be at play here...
Reynolds was recruited to run the show...she a tall setter which works better in a 5-1 which is what the staff wanted to work towards. However, I think that with setter depth and pin depth, I wont be surprised to see the 6-2 stick.
Peck is most likely redshirting....recovery has been very good with a good plan in place, but there is enough depth to give her more rest. Things should be interesting running practice with 20 players.

Reynolds was recruited prior to Neelon and was recruited to direct the offense depending on what our pin situation looked like. from what I have been told, she is going to be on the floor in some capacity.

It all begins today. UNC will begin preseason with the Navy Seal Challenge, "The Program". It was the team building training they also did 2 years ago.

As practices started UNC has a Gym packed full of athletic, physical, BIG and experienced athletes. Something they have not had for a few years. Depth at every position, motivating each other to earn court time. Covid lockdown is less of an impact and SA’s can have more of a balanced and normal college experience. This is gonna be a goood one if they can stay healthy and in a positive mindset. I am excited

Watch out for Nia Robinson....she is already impressing and can BANG the ball. Merkler, Howard, and Phegley all look very good and well conditioned to be one of the best middle positions in the ACC....
Still gotta work on the passing core and if the OHS will play around or be DS for. Reynolds has been running some 5-1 in practice as has Neelon with Bell/Archer jumping in to run some 6-2. So the setting situation is far from resolved.
As said, a lot of depth and also better attitudes so far.

Did UNC have a losing season this year? Right? Everyone get off the negativity train - you have a whole bunch of new people coming in, a returning roster that SHOULD be better than last year and some depth to play with. Some new setter talent coming in, some new people that can swing and some returners that can too - some middles returning that can terminate and lots and lots of LD/S. Let’s see what shakes up before we write these guys off. New year, new Attitude and no more Covid bubbles will make a huge difference. Agree. The negativity here has nearly met its match in inaccuracy. Through the years, the absurdity of info posted as fact- from very serious to mundane, trivial matters- is sometimes entertaining but shameful. Those of you with fair, honest criticism, this is the place for it. Just know you’re being fed inaccurate info at least 50% of the time. I don’t understand adults who seem to thrive on this. Base your opinions on what you see with your own eyes or hear directly from a personally known, reliable source. The wannabes are out of control. A new season, a new opportunity- let’s have the same attitude we expect from these athletes when the whistle blows. Go Heels!

We are a week into practices, and there are some observations already being made of course...
Setting: Reynolds has had some time running a 5-1 but isnt really fast enough to run the fast system the coaches want to run....Neelon, however, has really impressed the hitters and coaches. She connects well and plays defense well. Belle has played okay, but struggles to connect with the middles. Maylen struggles with setting the pins too tight, so some things to be honed in on but so far, Neelon is winning the setting battle.
Defense: Wurl looks to pick up where she left off as libero, but seems to have taken a more leadership role as an upperclassmen. Diaz seems to be playing more due to the fact we dont have 2 players on the OH that can play around. She most likely will be a DS for an OH and Shannon seems to be more of a serving specialist. Overbeck and Meyerhofer has seen some time, but one will most likely redshirt. Overbeck is very fast on her feet.
Middles: With setting still in flux, the middles are having to deal with some connection issues. When they connect, there is no doubt. Skyy Howard has the potential for a breakout year. She is healthy, strong, and seems to have worked on her arm swing some. Kaya is running the slide well. Phegley seems to be closing better on the block. Our middles will be the strongest of our positions to start.....the blocking is just as good as it has been and maybe better, the offense needs to settle in to a consistent system, but I expect the middles to be more involved this year.
Pin Hitters: I grouped left and right together because the options are similar. Nia Robinson was a good get. she is lighting it up offensively in the gym....think Lauren Harrison 2.0. Good in system and OOS. Her passing is not where it needs to be so I am expecting her to be DS'd. Her blocking is not as disciplined so I do not see her being on the RS. Mabrey is lethal as an attacker. She has heat and good shot selections, but her passing is also not quite where it needs to be. Her blocking is better than Robinson's so I could see her playing either pin. Buckner has had some limited time, and is still really good at working the block in front of her She is a smart attacker, as of now, I think she serves as depth for the pins. Zinger has done well with blocking. She is getting up a little higher and reaching better, but her offense and arm swing are not any better than last year. She is not terminal enough on the RS at this point. Parker Austin is the second player who has the potential to break out. She seems to be stronger when attacking and following through, and her defense and passing seems more focused. I think at this point she is our candidate for a 6 rotation OH. Peck looks to redshirt.
Weakness: Middle Connection, Finding a good tempo setter or running 5-1 or 6-2, Filling the RS with someone who can defend and terminate.
Strengths: Offense from the Left side and Middles, Strong defensive core, serving game seems to be strong as is receiving.
Next weekend is the Blue/White Game and HPU exhibition!

Oh how fun! I think that there is so much experience, athleticism and just pure joy at getting to play again, that this is gonna be a great year for this team. Almost everyone returns which has not happened in years and is ready to play. Depth at almost every position makes them compete for a place on the court and to win!
