One of the reasons I anxiously await the season. I just never feel right about speculating on starters or playing time, as that is an intra-team competition best left to the players, but that's just my thoughts. Do you think the early season schedule was set up to allow for a lot of playing time for the freshmen? I think the two double headers and back-to-back matches against Tulsa, Colgate, Kansas State, UNO, Georgia and Arizona State set the huskers up perfectly to get playing time for all the player to make these decisions.
Good point. I hope this next season, due to the size of the roster and the number of quality players, we see more substitution. Also more substitution over the next 3 years to utilize all of the talent on the team. Could the type of substitution used by the USA women's vb team to defeat Turkey in 5 sets be an example?

It is going to be hard to find enough balls to keep everyone happy. The college substitution rules will help. I look for more blocking subs to get more time for the setters and Opposite's. As tall as the freshmen net players are, we may see more DS subs to get Knuckles, Akana and Rodriguez playing time, but I hope they don't abandon the tradition of developing 6 ro OH's. By the time conference play starts, I look for them to have the lineup set, so the team chemistry has time to develop by tournament time.

Expect Lexi and Madi to continue to play back row rotations. They would not have to play full 6 rotations, except a back row attack will need to be maintained so they probably will, unless one or more of the other OH's can better their back row play. I'm kind of thinking out loud here, writing Captain obvious stuff, I think. Just like to see more subs to diversify the attacks and blocking schemes, and to get more players in, but weakening team chemistry is a potential down side.

Thanks, VolleyballMag! Pulling for USA’s beach teams, but also low-key supporting Pavan. I really feel for Tyler. Practices begin one day after his return from Tokyo, and trips back from Asia are the most grueling international flights. Seaweed masks, a silky playlist, Ambien or melatonin, and Delta One/first class are musts.

Only a bold prediction here. S: Hames OPP: Batenhorst (DS: Akana/Knuckles/Rodriguez) L1: Sun L2: Krause (DS: Kubik) M1: Schwarzenbach (SS: Akana/Knuckles/Rodriguez) M2: Caffey L: Akana/Knuckles/Rodriguez If Orr and Rodriguez take a redshirt season, they will have a golden opportunity to develop by playing across the net against the A-Team in practice. It also affords them four incredible years together as Nebraska’s first and second contacts. Orr can also take the time to fully recover from her ACL tear, if needed, by redshirting. A few quibbles: 1. While you are no doubt correct in thinking they will DS for two of the pins, I think Kubik is the most likely choice as the 6-rotation pin. I could see Sun playing the back row part of the time, while also being replaced by a DS at times. 2. If Kubik is struggling to get kills in the front row in a given match, it will be nice to have options (Krause, Batenhorst, etc.) to occasionally play across the front row in her place. 3. Assuming Stivrins doesn't play, I would expect Caffey to be the M1. She's more explosive than Schwarzenbach and thus a much bigger threat on the slide attack. 4. If they end up using DS's for two of the pins, it might not work to always use a serving sub for whichever MB the libero is not serving for. One possibility would be to use the serving sub the first couple of times through the rotation each set and then have the MB serve later in the set if they are running out of subs. I'm guessing this would be Caffey since her athleticism no doubt makes her a better defender in that situation. 5. A redshirt for Orr is definitely a possibility as she returns from her knee injury. However, I would be shocked if Rodriguez was even considered as a redshirt candidate. Barring injury, I think she will be on the floor for every match of her Nebraska career.

IMO, Lexrod is the best, or quickly will be, the best Libero. Economy of movement, instincts from playing the position forever, ability to set on 2nd contact, serve receive consistency, great hand-to eye and body control, matter-of-fact confidence will set her apart. People questioned the Nat. team staff playing Ally at OH and Lindsay at OPP. I think it was apparent that Lindsay is currently the stronger and more aggressive blocker that you need against BIG OHs. I think it will be awhile, if ever, before Madi is displaced. She is much more powerful in the attack and does so many other things. She would have feasted on those opponents in Netherlands/Belgium.

If Stivrins doesn't return, could we see Zuhn back in play in the middle? I feel like she could displace Callie if she moved back to Middle and Meyer is not ready for prime time. It sounds like we'll have more depth at the pins so we wouldn't necessarily need Zuhn there.

However, I would be shocked if Rodriguez was even considered as a redshirt candidate. Barring injury, I think she will be on the floor for every match of her Nebraska career. Word. All great points, but I like Caffey at M2 and Schwarzenbach at M1, just because Caffey is better at hitting in front of the setter while Callie showed she’s developed a better slide attack in the spring from what I recall. From a blocking standpoint, having Schwarzenbach as M1 with Hames for 2 rotations would be another good reason to slot her in there. Of course, like you mentioned, this all depends on the return of a healthy Stivrins. Reconsidering what I posted, I agree with you that Rodriguez needs to be on the court for her exceptional passing alone. She might be a better passer than Maloney was at her age. Other notes: I am really looking forward to rotation 1 s/o with Batenhorst on the left and Sun on the right this season. Akana is one of the top 2 servers on the team, so I would hope she’s at least serving. In broken plays, I’d love to see our pins start to reset the point by soft tipping into the block. Hames needs to continue being offensive at the net and build upon her success in the latter part of the spring. The R-W game might be one of the most competitive scrimmages we’ve seen to date! 🏐 Somehow you seem to have forgotten about Kalyan Meyer in the middle. I see her playing a lot. Callie Schwarzenbach was good enough to play in the national championship match as a freshman. Her sophomore season wasn’t as good-mostly because she had a broke bone in her hitting hand-but she never came out of the line up. She’s a great blocker, she’s 6’5 and she has Hildebrand to help her attacking. I see her playing a major role in the middle. I see Caffey struggling to find playing time in the middle. Spot duty to infuse offense, but that’s all. Krause will start. I hope they are careful with Orr-the propensity of female athletes to have a second ACL problem on the other knee is quite high, but I am sure they know this better than I do. Rodriquez will be the L. Batenhorst and Zunh will fill in to limited roles. I look for Lauenstein and Gray to redshirt. Strivins said this week on her podcast that she had back problems during most of the spring season and rarely practiced, had surgery after the season, and has not jumped since her surgery (she has rehabbed in the pool). I don’t see a scenario where she will physically be ready to play this fall. Hopefully she will be ready to find a professional team next spring. we’ll see how it goes…

One bad thing about this conversation is that we leave Riley, Kalynn, and Whitney out. They are all right there to breakthrough. They all have special physical ability and could have an "aha" moment during practice one day.
